I have my first purchase of a ring flash. I am planning on using it for my macro shots, unfortunatly, I never used a ring flash before, so I am interested in this thread.. following.

I should preface this with a disclaimer -- I don't know much about this stuff. A while back DPCer was getting rid of all his lighting equipment and, wanting to learn more about strobes and such, I sent him a check and received an enormous box of disassembled lightning equipment. Sorting out what was what was a bit overwhelming. Every couple months I would pull something out of the box, try to figure out what other pieces went with it, then try to figure out how to use it. The box included an AlienBees ABR800 Ringflash Unit and a companion Moon Unit. The Moon Unit is essentially a 30" ring softbox that attaches to the ring flash. I was intrigued by the moon unit and, after I figured out how to assemble it, I put it on the ring flash, and I have not taken it off. I have taken no shots with the ring flash alone (I'll put that on my list).

Ring flash / moon unit shots:

An interesting aspect/challenge of using the Moon Unit is when you are behind this large 30" dish your subject can't really see you and make eye contact. I will have to take off the Moon Unit and try some shots. I have been thinking of the pair as a single unit. So much to learn -- I still have stuff in that box I haven't pulled out yet.
