In my recent entry in Opposites, Still Growing, I choose to go with a subtle title, something more worthy of the long term, and not hit people over the head with my title.

Boy do I ever regret that! I tried to make reference to SIZE by refering to GROWING. I just confused people.

My title should have read: BIG and small.

Oh well. Live and learn.

BTW: thank you very much to ALL that commented. It is really very much appreciated.

I think your original title is the best one for the excellent shot.

Oh I don't think coming in 8th is 'blowing' it! You did well.
I personally loved the shot and was thinking it would ribbon.
Good work ..with any title.

I've thought about this too. After the 3rd comment from someone saying "how does this fit the challenge?" I'd wish I could change my title to "This is a picture of ... and this is why I took it ...". :P

I liked the title of the image. It made me stop and think about it, which was a nice change from flicking everything too fast. It's a very calming picture.

I agree..8th is nothing to be ashamed of, and the picture is outstanding...one of my top picks! congrats (and the title is perfect)

The title was fine. I really dont think it had any impact on the final results. BTW, I gave it a 9, thought it was great.

Um....you placed eighth. Where's the problem?
05/19/2004 11:37:25 PM · #8
Please don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the 8th place finish. I got some wonderful comments but too many revolved around it not meeting the challenge. I just think I confused people with my title. I think the title suits the image as a print.

I just wonder if I had not confused the voter, I might have been standing on the podium...Oh well...Try try again.

I remember this photo and really liked it alot. I didn't think the title you chose was vague at all. In addition to the obvious size contrast, there was also the rate of growth and sense of lifespan that the title evoked. Very nice photo indeed :)

8th is very respectable. I don't think a title change would hav gained very much . In my voting it was a top ten image and received a vote relative to the other photos in the challenge.

Its a superb shot, and one which you should be proud to have submitted. Don't kill yourself because of the title. When a photo gets to my top 10-15 I review them about 3-4 times before making small adjustments in the score. The title affects very little in this porocess. Its usually photographic impact by that stage.

Placing 8th out of 290 (98 percentile) then blaming your poor placement on your title borders on childish whining IMHO...

Please! I am not whining. I received many comments saying that my title was confusing and that my image did not meet the challenge.

I was just making a observation.

My photo had plenty of problems on it's own, don't get me wrong. I definitely hope it's going to be my worst entry ever for DPC. My current two are solidly in the 5's, so I think that my opposites was a fluke. However, I too should have picked a better title, would've helped. The title was "Two Fates", but it should've been "Heaven and Hell". The photo was too subtle to support a subtle title.

Honestly, half the time I don't even notice the title. I have eyes, I can judge for myself without a title if the photo meets the challenge or not. More often than not, I'm annoyed by a title that tries to do the work of the photo. In the case of Still Growing, it was obvious to me that you were comparing big and small. My reservation with that photo (I probably voted lower than most--I think I gave it a 6) was that the child appeared to be a doll. My daughter actually said, "Look, it's G.I. Joe." My son was convinced it was a G.I. Joe. I was actually surprised (and a bit relieved, to be truthful) to discover it was a real person. Of course, here in Rhode Island, we just don't have such gigantic trees. :-) We have a lot of gigantic egos though.

sorry but it does sound a bit whiny ("boy did i blow it?")...anyway, i agree with most, the photo was good and deserved it's excellent standing. the title should probably not be blamed or credited for your success.

Some voters deserve a little confusion. I, too, feel the original title is the better one. It provides a large context for the very distinct subject(s) of the photo. The title, IMO, is bridging a distance between the obvious comparative and a unifying notion of the nature of the two beings depicted.

This would not be accomplished by titling the photo Big and Small or something equally pedestrian.

I guess it was an inappropriate title to my post. I blew it, once again. Dang! I guess I'm never gonna get the hang of the titling of things. ;-)

It was simply in reference to coming soooooo close to the coveted ribbon.

I really like the title, and so does my wife, which is rare, as she is my least forgiving critic. It's just that I received so many comments on my title.

Thank you all for your reassurance and kind words.

To Melismatica: G.I Joe? LOL! Wait till my daughter hears that one!

I think the reason they thought of G.I. Joe was the articulation in the limbs. :-D She is so tiny compared to that tree that our minds just made that ajdustment. None of us (except myself, as a child visiting California) has seen a tree so large.

This was a great shot, Mario. I love the contrast, which is visually very clear, especially with your use of high contrast and b/w. Keep up the good work!
