Sorry, I missed that that was a link, but anyway I try to not click on links which don't have some explanation of what they're linking to ... |

Sounds like something my son would do on accident as well, and reason #1 we don't have any guns. If it were locked up in a safe, I probably couldn't get it out in time if the fecal matter was really hitting the fan, and I wouldn't take the chance of having it out and loaded.
We had a BB rifle which was fun, but we kept it outside and once the neighbor kids realized we had it, even though I let them shoot it whenever they wanted as long as they put it back, it walked away.
Same thing with a bike - I let any of them borrow it as long as it came back that evening - one night I made the mistake of leaving it on the porch, then the borrow became permanent for a kid a few streets over. |

Perhaps the reason his link description was abbreviated is that words failed him. Typing something like "Armed Two Year-Old Kills Mother" is kinda surreal for most of us from "Other". |

Why would someone have a gun in their handbag, it's just so unbelievably stupid and sad. |

The story linked from that one is even worse in that respect. The 3 year old found the gun under the couch, and shot mom while she was changing the diaper of the baby. Two very young children and a loaded gun left under the couch. |

(Is this a shitty sense of humor?) ;)
Seriously though, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a RFID activated gun, where only someone with the implanted chip could fire it. Not as a requirement mind you, but as an option - frankly I'd buy one tomorrow - the idea of a handgun that ONLY I can fire is appealing. |

I wouldn't say it was stupid because you dont agree with it. this woman most likely felt she was safer by carrying a gun. She gambled wrong and lost. Happens to a lot of people but it was her choice, as tragic as the story is.

Very true, how many people text and drive? It's a gamble many people take every day. |

Except no-one thinks they are safer because they text and drive. |

and that's why its illegal in most places, texting and driving offer no societal benefit. guns, or owning one, at least provides a sense of security and safety, of which we should all be entitled to should we not? maybe the day will come when people dont feel the need to carry and possess destructive weapons, but we arent there yet and thus the debate goes on. |

True that. Many people are anti gun until they need one. |

Is it legal for a mother to carry a LOADED gun in her purse?
Did she NEED it? |

She had a concealed-carry permit, though I don't know whether her actions in allowing access to the gun were in compliance with that permit.
As to whether one needs a gun in Wal-Mart ... perhaps more likely in the parking lot? |

She had a concealed permit so yes it was legal. Her means of carrying was not so good. I will venture to say (and this is truly speculation) that it was not in a holster. They make holsters that are designed to attach to the inside of purses. This could have decreased the likelihood of the child being able to discharge the firearm. There are also other conceal methods that could have been used....
OK "Did she need it??" You never know when you may " need" it until you need it. It is better to be prepared just incase you need it. We also don't know her backstory. She may have had a stalker, or an abusive ex husband that threatened to kill he....etc.

Interestingly, she seems likely to have been committing a felony at the time of her death.
That appears to be a Walmart Supercenter, and if that is the case, it would be VERY likely to have alcohol, and establishments that sell alcohol are off-limits for CC permit holders while they are packing. |

Not here in Louisiana......It specifically calls out places that serve alcohol...not that just sell it.

I wonder how many people have actually needed a gun ? personally I never have, I did have someone point one at my head in a Palestinian town once, having one would have definetly worsened my predicament. Maybe one day I will need one and I'll regret all my rantings here, one thing is for sure though, humanity would be a whole lot better off with a bit more tolerance and compassion.

Concealed or not, does having a permit to carry a gun mean you can carry it around with you, loaded and ready to fire at all times? And aren't there safety triggers at least?
What kind of parent would carry a loaded gun with them around children or leave one lying around on the floor under the couch?
And the thing about NEEDING it is ... and every time I hear one of these stories I think to myself.... what if these people had no guns with them? Guns are so fast... split second. Bang, Bang you're dead.
What if you are in a situation and, instead, had to stop and THINK for a moment - do I really want to kill this person? Can you imagine? Or maybe I'm just naive enough not to realize that the other person will ALWAYS have a gun and I'd better be prepared.
To me, we are making a choice to put children and other people at risk by carrying around loaded weapons - just in case we might need them because we never know when that will be.
When was the last time you heard a story about a life SAVED because some civilian happened to have a loaded gun with him/her at the right time? Again, I'm probably just not paying enough attention.
