How is everyone doing?
I am so excited, I have not been posting much or entering challenges much, I have not fallen away because I put and forced myself in strict learning mode only right now.
Sometimes, when I start things I jump full feet into things without learning the basic stuff and then I want to be a Master at everything which never happens because I am so excited to do something so new, and then later I either fall out of it or I fall in love with it.
I am totally in love with photography, always have been but now I am finding what I love to shoot especially macros,landscapes, animals and my eagles. I have been taking tons of pictures of my eagles, but yet not edited them and I am very excited to see how they will turn out after learning these new editing techniques.
I am going back to the basics of things
I have been getting into a lot of tutorials lately, but I have been specifically watching kelby ones and Serge Ramelli...
At the end of one of Serge's live tutorials, I actually won one of his tutorial classes and there's 22 lessons just in this one retouching class that he gave me. I have been just through the first lesson but I keep pausing it and keep re-going over a few of his stuff just so I can learn where things are and how to do things. I never knew editing could be so much fun, or the fact is, I was making something so simple so damn hard on myself.
I am still trying to learn my work flow for lightroom and get a better grasp on editing my RAW files.. I still struggle pretty bad with it, as I have been sitting in on some of his live tutorials and I am just amazed on this dudes work flow and what he processes.. not so much of what he takes but HOW he processes it. Things he has been doing, I have been doing just the opposite of how he has been doing it, no wonder why my photos have been looking like crap!
I thought it was cool and neat, but it turns out I have been just blowing my pictures way out whack on things ( and I know I have because of the comments made here too confirmed things LOL). It has been an awesome eye opener for a few techniques especially about the clarity and sharpening (my two favorite things to way overuse) I am learning his black and white now and his tricks just totally blow me away.
Another thing I was way overusing which was wrong was how the masking/noise workflow has been too..
I re-edited a few of my older pictures that I like so much and man, it really does make a difference and an old dog can learn new tricks :-))

I love taking pictures, but the editing part was really holding me down as well... sometimes, its good to just say
I AM FREE WOOOHOOO!!!!!! What a great workflow Serge he really isa Master at lightroom..

that's awesome! Congrats on the win in the live tutorial class :)
I haven't ever taken a course on post-processing (can you tell?), it's probably something I should look into also. Glad to hear things are going well for you with it! |

Glad you are learning some tricks to get your photos closer to what you want to see. Always a very fulfilling accomplishment.
If you'd like another set of eyes for feedback on the editing styles I can pipe in my two cents. I'm definitely no expert but happy to help. |

Thank you, I so appreciate it, That is why I love DPC and have stuck around because I have been helped by many down the road since I started... it means a lot to me and the TPL really put a new kick start on things. One of my favorite things about DPC is the people here. Without you all, I would not have advanced to as much as I have already.
I am sure I will be needing it, just so much to learn and to get a style of your own down

I have been doing the same thing. I realized that unless I invested some time in building a good foundation, that I wouldn't be able to take the quality of images that I invisioned. I started with Lightroom tutorials figuring it would be good to learn how to use the tools I already own! Anthony Morgani's free videos on YouTube are wonderful too. I'm glad you found an instructor that suits your learning style.
Now I am focusing on really learning how to take good images with my older DLSR camera. I have a Rebel XTi, when I master it, then I can think about what to spend money on and upgrade my camera.
I have been on and off DPC for a decade now. There is lots of great experiences and learning opportunities available from being a member here. I'm looking forward to growth in my abilities in 2015, and it sounds like you are doing exactly the same thing! Good luck and I will look forward to seeing your new images in the challenges soon! |

You can start a thread in the Individual Photo section stating what you feel is "lacking" in your post-processing, with a couple of "unsatisfactory" examples (before and after) and a description of how you'd like them to look different from the result you got.
People who do this will typically get somewhere between 2 and 7 suggested re-edits with "instructions" ... |

Also remember that many of these get turned into official Tutorials (over 80 posted here) and "How'd They Do That?" articles (over 60) -- my own (im)modest example here -- look under the Learn menu ... and if your "article" gets posted you get a free month's membership or credit at DPC Prints. |

The tutorial page says to submit in HTML format - do you know how much is supported as far as mouseover actions/embedded images (GIF in particular)/tables?
Wouldn't want to spend a long time on all that to have it chopped up... |

AAAAAA  CBalck... You totally get me! It is how I am.. I have been dying for an upgrade for my D60, but unless I know and learn the basics how is that going to help me with a newer power camera LOL I have produced some pretty darn good photos with my D60, but I realized when I was doing these tutorials with Kelby and Serge, that holy moly, I had no clue what they were talking about when it came to shooting... so back to block one LOL
That is a great suggestion for those threads and I will abuse the heck out of them too, maybe I can start posting what I am doing too then that way I can start getting advanced help too, I so love that thank you for reminded me that those threads are available here. I had totally forgotten.
I feel I get distracted a lot of times too, getting pulled in so many directions for photography and wanting to get to do this or getting to do that.. it has so many doors, I had no clue which way I was coming in or out of..
I have to literally ground myself from doing things in order to concentrate and slow down a bit sometimes. Sometimes, that means even for posting fun things on my groups or forums.
Right now, my listening ears are on and I have duct tape over my fingers and mouth, I am not allowing myself to get distracted like I was in the beginning LOL
After I get through this session and tutorial that I won, I will post what I have done in those threads. I think it would be an awesome start kick up again!
It feels great that I am not the only one having editing issues or shooting issues.. the thrills of newbie learning lolol

I don't know, but I think I just uploaded the screen-shots to a folder here, and then gave Langdon a text file with the appropriate thumb references in it, and he then posted it. |
