One thing to think about with all mattresses, but especially memory foam is chemical outgassing from VOCs. If you or your partner have respiratory problems you may want to consider an alternative like natural latex mattresses. Very expensive but supposedly as comfortable as memory foam without the odors. They do use adhesives so are not totally chemical free. Another thing about mem foam and lates mattresses are they are very heavy, so if you will need to move them or flip them often you may need another couple of helpers or else you may wind up laid up in the new bed you just bought.
We are saving up for a latex mattress but in the meantime we purchased inflatable Aerobeds. They are usually made with PVC, another outgasser, but the model we purchased does not have PVC and I'm unable to discern any chemical odor. What we are totally amazed about is the comfort level. I put together a wooden platform bed with thick boards, on top of that laid some Dycem so the mattress doesn't slip about, then put down the Aerobed and on top of that put down a 4 inch featherbed from The Company Store. We are very satisfied with the comfort level. The only thing is they make crunching noises with movement. You do have to refill the beds with the provided electric air pump about once a week, or more, depending on (ahem) activity level. Inflatables are not supposed to be durable or last a long time but we haven't used them long enough to make a determination on that. We purchased two twin sized mattress for $30 a piece from Ocean State Job Lot. Well worth it, imo. |

This is troubling. We just purchased a Sleep Number bed about 8 weeks ago. One that has adjustable head & feet. Really liking it so far. My wife says that hip and back pain has gone away since getting this bed. I hope that we still feel the same in a year, but good for now. |

my only advice would be is to watch the depth because the sheets can be expensive, i need to use 16-18" depth sheets. |
Mike...I'm a sheet snob!!! Go to Tuesday Mornings they have "deep pocket sheets" that will make you "sigh" and not cry at the register...watch the thread count....you want 600 or higher (expect groans at this level). The should be between $65 to 85 a SET (king) including pillowcases. This is the only place I'll buy sheets!!! Be sure to stick you finger in the bag n "feel'um". They should be soft n supple. Ok, I'll stop!!! |
Thread count isn't the best, or really even a good way to measure a sheet's quality or comfort. For one, there's no standard on how it gets measured. Some manufacturers will count each strand in the actual thread as a "thread" to boost the count. Also Good Housekeeping found that 7 out of 8 manufacturers exaggerate their thread count. The most important factors are really the cotton or other fibers used and their finish. Like Mr. Tomchin who probably knows more about sheets than anyone here says, âOnce you get beyond 400 threads per square inch, be suspicious.â and âAn 800-thread-count sheet made of two-ply yarn should legitimately be relabeled as 400,â
From Consumer's Reports: "Our latest tests again confirmed that higher thread count doesn't guarantee better sheets. In fact the top-scoring percale sheets, which had a claimed thread count of only 280, were strong, shrank very little, and easily fit mattresses up to 17 inches high, even after we washed and dried them five times."
For me, thread count is 90% marketing BS. |

Thanks for all the informative replies! Tomorrow we go back to the store...it's small business Saturday! (We try to shop local, small businesses, when we can.)
The info about heat retention for foam is something that may sway us away from it. We tend not to use air conditioning in the summer, so heat is a problem.
The pillow top sounds good--though I see caveats there too. We are good about rotating the mattress (or should I say my wife is). She's lives by a calendar. Perhaps an innerspring with a foam topper (separate) would let us configure the bed for the season, and rotate it completely as well. I'm actually fine with our current mattress, so innerspring may be the way to go.
I still have to decide firm or softer--I do sleep on my side mostly. Of course, we'll be trying to make the final decision in the store tomorrow. |

We currently have a Serta Pillow top. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the mattress does take a set. There is now a hill in the middle of the bed. We've had the bed for over ten years, so I believe we have gotten our money out of it.
I have slept on sleep number beds in hotels. I've probably spent almost as much time playing with the settings as sleeping. I like them, but not priced them.
We slept on a water bed for over twenty years. My back is too picky for one of those anymore. But it serves us well for almost 25 years. |

We haven't made a "final" final decision. When we went out shopping my wife decided to buy an entirely new bedroom set, but we bought an Amish set, so it's a long wait for delivery.
We liked the Beautyrest and Serta iSeries Hybrid beds. I think we were leaning towards the Serta.
That was based on subjective trials. Not sure if it's the right thing...reading what appears to be a great resource //www.sleeplikethedead.com/
(We aren't sure if they are really unbiased...but it seems so.)

We had a very firm mattress - we were led to believe they are better for you. My husband liked it but it nearly did my shoulders and hips in. After me suffering for about a decade we decided to look at a mattress topper, but instead came away with a sleep number bed. We have had it a couple of years and it is brilliant for both of us. No problems so far, so I hope it stays good. |

All I know about my mattress is it's from IKEA, no boxspring (so it's suspended in the frame by a bunch of wooden slats) and I find it frickin perfect for me. Others have told me it's too soft.
Slept on a Posturepedic bed on overnight stays, and it was sheer HELL. Last few months, it was like sleeping on a wet bag of cement.
Have been thinking of going Sleep Number bed - hey if it's good enough for Bob and Tom, it'll probably be good enough for me! |

Call my daughter and ask her if you can test mine while I am away to Australia and New Zealand. Should give you ample testing time since I am away till February.

Ok, finally the end of this chapter for me. We had to make a final decision, and we went back to a mattress store.
We ended up with a Tempur-pedic:
//www.tempurpedic.com/tempur-cloud-collection/tempur-pedic-tempur-cloud-supreme.asp
Besides relative comfort in testing, I cite two reasons:
1) We had slept on this exact model before at my mother in laws. The 2-3 minute try out this mattress, now this one, was like an eye exam...we couldn't really tell the right answer. We know we were ok sleeping on this one before, so it gave some piece of mind.
2) They were expensive, but the salesman proposed $1000 off for a floor model. And when we went to the desk to talk about it...he ended up giving us that price on a new model. At least it was $1000 off what the Tempurpedic site shows...so it seems like it was a good deal, and it was only a bit over what we were planning to spend on a hybrid mattress.
On a side note, we wanted to buy "local" on this, but since the time we started looking, the local store we went to was now going out of business! (Says retirement closing, but I would presume they would have tried to sell the store if they could.) We ended up buying from Sleepy's, which is a pretty big chain, rather than something locally owned.

Congrats on your new mattress!

I hate how buying a mattress is like buying a car. Reading this snipit gave me uneasy flashbacks of when we bought our last mattress. At least you had the website as a reference. $1000 off the website price sounds like a decent deal, but what's with the "Oh, I know I said floor model for that price, but I changed my mind, you can have a new one at that price instead!". That seems so weird and unnecessary.
We bought a noname brand when we got ours, and were initially quoted a price. When we came back, another guy was like, "No way he gave you that price" and quoted us one much higher. Thankfully we had the business card where he wrote the quote. We even had to do the whole "We're walkin', goodbye" thing. A nightmare I tell ya!
We were buying local from what I used to joke was a mafia cover. It's the #1 mattress store for the area, and they have a zillion stores. In fact, all the furniture stores in this area are owned by two guys. It doesn't matter what the store is called, because they're all different names, they own them all. When the TV station shuts down for the night, there's a full screen ad for the mattress store that plays all night until programming comes back on. That can't be cheap to do every night for years and years. I used to wonder how a "mattress store" got all that money until we bought the mattress from them. The whole thing made me so uncomfortable that I promised our next one would come from Macy's or something. |

That's essentially the one we liked and were considering, except the local store going out of business had us looking again. At least we've slept on the tempurpedic before, and it's rated well for side sleepers like us.
Michelle: I agree. We do think what transpired at the store was a bit of salesmanship. We hadn't priced that model anywhere else, and for all I know it's discounted in many places. And he was a bit like a car dealer...we wanted to walk away and get back to him on it...but he told us we would need to buy it then...but we could always cancel. Typical strategy...never let the customer leave the store.
But it was still a good price, and if when I got home I decided it was to any extent a scam, I definitely would have called to cancel.
We have a car dealer here whose ads are ubiquitous and drive me crazy. Fortunately, I rarely watch live TV.
