Bear you will be happy to hear that I've finally gotten rid of my boat anchor of a computer and replaced it with a beautiful new Asus Gaming Laptop (I think this is what you have as well). What I didn't realize when I got the 17" laptop is that I'm going to have problems finding a laptop/camera backpack.

So here is my question...what do you have for your "oversized" laptops (12.5" x 16.5") and camera gear? I like to use a backpack because when I fly it all fits in one bag. But I might have to go to two bags...sigh.

I went to our local camera store and only 1 bag fit but the camera gear area was totally lacking. Lowepro has a bag that "should" fit but it won't "go into" the opening, it's on the side vs top and just won't fit into their opening.

I would appreciate your input...obviously price is key.

Well, it's not a backpack but I have a Pelican laptop case that fits a 17" laptop. It's heavy, though. Comes with foam and you can customize the size so it fits snugly in there, and protects it from just about anything.

Well, it's about time, Janine :-) Mine's even bigger than that, BTW, I have an 18 inch screen plus the speakers on each side, it's a brute. There was no backpack that even came close to fitting, so I got a bag designed to carry a musical keyboard or something, fits it precisely...

I have a couple other bags that I can cannibalize and put my "dividers" into it...I did find a Asus bag but it's a little pricey...sigh. But I think I can "convert" it...if push came to shove.

Yes, this is a brute for sure. Maybe I should think about one on wheels???

I think now would be a good time to get an assistant. "D

I have a 17" Asus gaming laptop also. Love it. But I always feel a little guilty at my favorite hang-out when I have to hog a table for 4 & my laptop takes up all the space for 3. [eta] I got mine a couple of years ago & it came with it's own customized backpack. Right around that time, I also went to a much smaller camera.

i have this bag that holds most of my camera gear and 17" macbook pro. well made but it's big and pretty heavy. if i were to get another bag to carry all my stuff, i'd probably look into a rolling one like you mentioned.

oops, edit to add link to the bag.

All the bags that I've tried say they will fit a 17" MacPro but does not fit my computer (did I mention it's a brute!!!). Where is the compartment for the computer on that bag? It's not clear where it is. I did put it on my wish list along with a few other bags...I have discovered Kata??? Anyone else have that bag?

Keep in mind that I usually only use this to carry onto the plane and transport to the hotel/lodgings. I DO NOT plan on carrying this brute any further than I have to!!!

ETA: Do you think that I could use some of my dividers from my other bags and make this one work? I know that it WILL fit the computer.

Here is a good site for comparing bags.

Camerabag.com

I have the Lowepro Fastpack 350 and it holds a 17" laptop. Slip the right shoulder strap off and you can sling it around with side access to your camera. The newer DSLR Video Fastpack 350 AW also holds a 17" laptop.

Tried the 450AW (they didn't have the 350AW) and it didn't fit into that. Actually it looked like it would fit (size wise) but because of how the zipper was (on the side vs top) it (monster computer) wouldn't go into the bag...sigh...Unless I'm missing a trick here.

But thank you.

I usually pack the computer in a tote bag with my other carry on stuff. Have the separate camera bag. And stuff all my clothes in my husband's suitcase so he has to carry those. :)
