I was contacted today by the Historical Society who would like this photo, problem being its a turd. I am flattered they want it, would love for them to have it, but I cant stand the photo. Help me please.
Cant even find the URL? Does anybody know where to find the URL for the photos?

thank you annie, I think I finally got it. If this isn't full format, if anybody wants to take a go at it, let me know, and I will find a way to get you the full format.

I see why they like it, with the sunset light on the bldg & the lightening in the distance. It just needs to be sharper, somehow. |

no sunset, it was 4am, and I was creeped out to the max., Its the street lights that give it that amber light. I was trying to get lightning behind it. Very old building in our county, a lot of history. I've been working on this turd off and on for 4 days, maybe 3. I can't find anything I like about it. Thank you guys though. |

It would help if you could describe what it is you don't like, and what you want "fixed" and how. My first thought would be to try to bring out some of the detail hidden (on my monitor at least) in the darkest areas, but I don't know if that's what you want ... |

OK heres a reference point we can start with as what you want or dont wnat enhanced. I toned down the yellow from the opposing street lamp it was killing the detail on the church and the awesome "Handmade Ice Cream" writing. It can be brought back though. Do you have the RAW file or just jpg? The starting point had very little detail in the shadows and highlights. Anyhow spend your thoughts and we will see how to get it where you want it :)

If you click on the thumb then original it will show the 2mb file. Not sure if that is the largest available. |

Only Jpeg, sorry. I really don't know what I'm doing RAW. Have never tried honestly. I like the color enhancements. I'm struggling with the noise in the sky, but I do like the the lighter shade and being able to see the sky a little bit bet8ter.
I'm working on it on my end as well, I tried creating multiple layers for the details in the sky, and erasing the rest slowly, to no avail..nothing I couldn't do with the dodge tool from the get go. I've also tried using High Pass, to sharpen up the foreground. A little luck with that. So far to try and eliminate the noise, I have tried so many techniques so far. I tried, despeckle of course. tried reduce noise. tried gaussian blur, and motion blur to different opacities, Im coming up empty there, it looks like that sky is hopelessly riddin with noise.
I shot at ISO 100, 30s, with my best lens, the Japanese version of the 28-55mm canon. So going crazy with this photo.
Thank you for your support, its awesome to see this site still running so appropriate. |

OK here's what I've got. Full size-JPG is accessible by clicking for full size. It's a very nice picture actually. I have denoised it, straightened the perspective, and recovered detail/fixed color balance. It's a SPOOKY picture, it's a;most Halloween, is there a connection? :-)

Looks good to me ... I think you should also dodge the lightning bolt to make it look more electric -- looks kind of fuzzy on my monitor ... |

Jacob it seems your pretty comfortable in PS so shooting in raw shouldn't be too far off your mark. The main difference with raw is you handle the processing versus the camera. The bad thing about sitting jpg is that once processed by the camera it's really hard to bring back details in the shadows and highlights. It's really beneficial for shots like these. |

I will consider that very seriously, especially since its about all I enjoy doing anymore, chasing lightning.
Bear, that is awesome looking, way better than anything I have achieved so far, do you mind if I use it? If you say you do mind, I will not take offense, it really does look good. |

bears edit, I've dodged the bolt, and took out those dancing red, and blue dots, which I'm still not sure why they always find their way into my shots. Anyway, this is the one I will take to them, any objections or critiques. |

They're probably hot pixels created from the long exposure. Happens a lot on the smaller sensors. |

Good job! I didn't bother with the hot pixels (that's what they are) since I didn't know how far this was going. The lightning looks better in your version too :-) |
