Does anyone here own the Canon s500? I am thinking about buying one and would like some user feedback. I didn't see it listed in the camera list here on DPChallenge...

Looking at the specs it looks like the same parts that are used in the PowerShot S50 with the exception of 1/2000 shutter speed my S50 does 1/1500, all shoved into ultracompact body.
My S50 has produced some awesome results. Everything from macro to action shots. The S50 fits into my pants pocket but the S500 would fit in a shirt pocket, making it an excellent candid, suprise shot camera.
I only got the Powershot Pro1 because the Wide Angle and x3 zoom was just not enough for me. Adapters for the Canon PowerShot compacts are available but were a little spendy for me.

That Pro1 looks like a great camera. I'm just interested in something small for point and shoot stuff. |

Yup, I guess what I really meant to be the point of my post was if canon is putting the same parts from the PowerShot S50 into the PowerShot S500 (elph body) you would not be disappointed. The colors are very true to nature, the W/B worked quite well, and you got 5MP so there can be a bit of error in your framing the shot. |

The S500 uses the same sensor that is in the G5, I used that camera for some time with excellent results. I would love to have the same quality images from a Elph size camera.
My dad looked at the Pro1 and wound up getting the Oly8080, which is even better IMO.

I have the s410 which is supposedly identical except that it has 4megapixels instead of 5. I've only had it for a few weeks but it really is a great little camera. I wanted a camera I could keep in my purse so I never missed a picture (especially of my grandkids).
It takes a really clear picture with lovely color. I've been really pleased with all the pictures I've taken with it. |

Thanks :) I think i'll pursue either the 410 or the 500. I can't make up my mind. |

The only diff btwn the 410 and the 400 is the addition of a new 'Print and Share' button to make prnting and downloading more consumer friendly.
One of the main differences between the S410 and S500 is how many photos they can take in continuous shooting mode. In standard continuous mode, both shoot at 1.5 frames/second. Each image is shown on the LCD as it is taken -- a necessity for tracking a moving subject. In high speed mode, the S410 shoots at 2.5 frames/sec, while the S500 does 2.2 frames/sec. The images are not shown on the LCD as they are taken, which means that you'll need to use the optical viewfinder to follow your subject.
Finally, I have read that at the higher iso's, the 500 is a little bit noisier than the 4x0's.

I was also considering either the 410 or the 500 for my parents and I think they'll be filled with joy with a 410. Even the 410 will be a huge step up from the Kodak disposables he currently uses and my mom's aging film camera. Thanks for the help! :)

Here's a sample picture taken with my s410 - it's totally unedited except to resize and save for the web. It's a candid shot of my husband at our favorite Mexican Restaurant. I think the camera did a great job for such a bad lighting situation. It's so small and handy to carry around that it's great for candid photos like this.

Shopping around on ebay, the 410 and the 500 can be had for about the same prices... |

Wow, that is a nice shot. Excellent details. Here is a package deal at B&H for $519.95 and looks like a good deal to me (if priced separately, it totals $582): //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=326304&is=REG

That seems like a pretty good bargain at B&H, MrAkamai. The photo printer thing would be handy for your parents if they didn't want to mess with the computer. I bought mine at Amazon.com where the 410 is $354 with free shipping. My husband uses an Amazon credit card for traveling so we get lots of $25 gift certificate things to use there and I had $100 off in gift certificates as well. The s500 is $439 at Amazon.
I decided to go with the s410 because in reviews it was less noisy than the s500 and did better macros. So far, I haven't any noise at all in the pictures I have taken with it.
Here's a sample picture taken outside of my grandson trying to hit a ball. It's unedited except to resize and save for the web. I'm really pleased with this little camera!
