Unbelievable surf in Newport Beach, CA spawned by a category 5 hurricane off Mexico's coast. Stunning stuff. Look at the CROWDS in the water...

lol looks like half those people have no business on those waves.

hehe...the wedge is a mutant wave. when waves come in at a certain angle, they sort of bounce off the jetty and the energy gets reflected back into the wave causing it to double and triple in size before hitting the shallow water. i've never been but know a lot of guys that have. they say it's crazy but incredibly fun.

It does look like the break is really close to shore making it a very short ride. Or is that a trick of the camera angle?

I went there in June and spent hours watching those guys and gals get hammered. It does break right on the shore.

Yeah, a friend of mine lives down there and says the waves are insanely huge right now. Pops would-be surfers right off the back of the wave.

What kills me is that they call Daytona Beach...Surfing Capital of the World...man...do they ever need to get out in the world more!!!! We don't ever have waves like that!!! EVER, NEVER, EVER

Seeing waves like this is on my bucket list. Just SEEING them. I have no need to get wet by them.

I'm pretty sure each of those shots were a one time thing and the lifeless bodies of those surfers just piled up on the shore.
