In my group of local Photographer friends, I m considered "technical" because i approach a lota my shots with a very specific idea in mind. I also happen to know many/most of my Camera's features and functionalities s/p?

When i explained to a buddy who owns a 5dmkiii how much easier his life could get with some of them - he was totally into it.

Simple thing, he didn't know how to turn off the BEEP in single shot mode. Hadn't known how to do it in the last year + of owning the thing.

So I looked up a useful article (because i m lazy) and I m posting it here, for other 5dmkiii users. I think itd be great if other people familiar with their equipment do the same. One hour can change your understanding about your camera if you've been afraid of it..

Heres my contribution: LINK

The settings are this guys personal preferences, but there are plenty you might find useful. Mines set up a bit different, but still I think this is enough material to get anyone started.

Hope this was useful!

so many people forget to read the manual! I review my manual every now and then and always find something I had forgotten about. It just makes sense to me to get to really know your camera.

LOL anytime I'm having problems with the camera, or don't know how to do something in-camera, Ryan's all over me to read the manual!

And I do...or at least try to. But Nikon manuals are very badly written (imnsho) so that makes things frustrating at times. Luckily there is a built-in info button, so if I'm really stuck I use that :-)

Nope.

*sigh*

When I first got my newer cam I combed through the manual and was blown away how I could customize so many functions, and I did. Pretty darn cool.

Lydia - the 6d is a dream toy for a lot of the newer cooler stuff. I think youd love to get to know it a little better.

I know, Devinder... but... I read the manual... and get all excited... and then... I forget it. Not just how to do it... but that it even exists!

I wish I were blonde.

Then, I'd have an excuse.

I think the best thing to learn on a camera is to configure the "personalization" features.

On my Nikons that's the My Menu area. I put everything I need there that's not already on a button.

And then there's the U1/U2 settings. I've set them but sometimes it's hard to remember what I put there.

I just configured my new FZ1000 for a trip though...and in that case, I put HDR mode on C1 and silent mode on C2-2. C2-1 is set to manual JPEG mode, which allows their 2x zoom mode to work (like Sony's Clear Image Zoom). Both work better than digital zoom...which is also available for another multiplier.

But I wish you could label these so when you selected them they would show the label in the viewfinder. That would be easy for these guys to program in, but I've never seen it.

For me, the Nik D7000 is sort of like flying a space shuttle by the seat of the pants. After three years there are still things that I find for the first time, or run across again after forgetting that they are available.
So far, it's been a good times machine, and I get done what I want with it most of the time.
Sometimes, it's hard to remember to reset things that I change for a scene, so the next few shots look sort of odd.

When I bought my camera, I opted for versatility and simplicity over quality ... the main downsides are no RAW* (without firmware hack), poor high-ISO noise, 15-sec maximum exposure (no bulb exposure) ... but the useful features I do use:

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Full manual exposure control with EVF (shows settings effects with half-press of shutter), plus Tv, Av, and Program**
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Long zoom (432mm in 35mm EQ)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Tilt-swivel LCD
ΓΆ€ΒΆ SuperMacro mode (focus 0-8cm)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Custom White Balance
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Optional close-up lens (gives essentially 1:1 macro image)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Polarizers, graduated ND filters
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Exposure- and focus-bracketing
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Stitch-assist mode (shows part of previous frame in viewfinder to help align next shot) for panoramas
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Intervalometer (time-lapse mode, up to 100 frames)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ One-button movie mode (zoom and auto-focus during video)

*One advantage of JPEG-only (and limited megapixels) is that my storage requirements are quite modest -- I've been using the same 1.5TB drive for almost four years and it's only half-full ...
** and Auto and many other modes I don't use
