I"m not kidding. The IRS (the tax department) just sent me a check for $1,000 even though I'm not expecting a refund. No letter of explanation either, but it sure looks official. I'm going to call and find out why they have chosen to bless me, but in the meantime... a thousand dollars! Perhaps I should upgrade from my A70? Duh!

Okay who wants to help me spend my manna from heaven?

You could always help those less fortunate than you (me) who have really sad little 3.2 mp sony cameras (me) since you already have such a wonderful setup (not me). LOL :o)

You will probably get a letter tomorrow wanting the money back and charging you interest and penalties.

The IRS has been sending me penalty letters quarterly, each time after my accountant writes back they dismiss without admitting its their mistake, and then I get another one the next quarter. This is the one year anniversary.

That's funny, I believe $1000 just fell out of my pocket. Perhaps it fell into your lap? If you could return it, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I called the local IRS office. After 15 minutes of busy signals, I got a recording which would only me an 800 number to talk to a "fast and friendly" agent. I called that number, which gave me a recording, which gave me another 800 number to call. I called that number, which gave me a recording, which did not give me any choices involving talking to real people. I tried one of the options, entered my social security number, filing status, etc. and the recording told me they couldn't help me. I've now spent a half hour on the process and know nothing at all except that there are no "fast" OR "friendly" agents available to speak to the public. Erggggggg!!!

I guess they want you to keep it.

I hate those freakin automated systems. Went through a similar 1/2 hour for Chase Manhattan, just pressing buttons, "we will connect you to a customer service official." Then it would hang up on me....3 times!!! I am thinking of sending them a bill for the whole hour of MY time they wasted for their screwup.
It does sound like they want you to keep it. If they do want it back, tell them you are keeping some interest and penalties out of it, since they stored their money with you, and they were the ones that screwed up. Put their policies back on them. hehehe

Two miracles in the same day -- I got a check from the IRS, and I ::finally:: got thru to a human being who helped me figure out why I was getting the check. It's really mine, all mine!

Now I'm seeing an Oly C-8080 in my hands in my crystal ball. Thought my next cam would be a Rebel, but I don't think I'm ready for the extra weight, expenses for additional lenses, and so on. IMHO, the 8080 is the best of the prosumers out there these days. That said, I'm open to suggestions!

DON'T CASH IT UNTIL YOU TALK TO THEM... My husband and I got a refund check a couple of years back for $2200+, cashed it, put it in savings and proceeded to try and find out what the deal was before we decided to spend it. It took six months for them to figure out why they'd sent it in the first place (it was a mistake) and then they charged us interest from the day we cashed it until the day they received our check we sent back to them. It was a total nightmare. They said we wouldn't have had to pay interest if we hadn't cashed it in the first place.

***EDIT***
Whoops... too late... never mind. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

For those who receive something similar in the mail, be sure to look at it carefully. My wife and I received a very official looking 'refund check' last month that was actually just a loan application disguised to look very much like a State of California refund check. We had to triple check just to make sure our misgivings were justified. It didn't even have the standard "This is not legel tender" stuff. Scary.

My dad bought an Oly 8080. He typically lets me figure out his toys and then explain them, so I got to play with it. What can I say, it's a really nice camera to use. The menu system takes some getting used to, but I'm used to the Canon way of laying things out. Enjoy.

Heh, we got $1000 more than expected on our federal return too. Turns out I goofed up and thought we were supposed to get $1140 but they re-calculated it and sent $2140. I didn't get a statement explaining anything for quite a few weeks.

Congratulations! I also got a nice refund ($3600) from the Canadian CCRA this year, and I spent it on a Nikon D100 package. I'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow. Can't stand the wait - it's like waiting for Christmas!

Please send that to your local Postal Inspector (or take it to any Post Office) -- there's very specific standards these mailers must meet or they're in big trouble with the Feds.

We actually got in touch with the State Franchise Tax Board, from which the fraudulent company's offer was claiming to originate. I honestly hope they get in serious trouble for that scam.
