I am using a Fuji S5000 and have had it about 6 months, I know my way around it pretty good, but it is the first 'real' camera I have owned. I see these beautiful shots of the city at night with a stream of lights from the cars, I know its using a slow exposure, but I'm not quite sure how to do it with my camera. I also saw a clock where you could see the second hand for all 8 seconds, like there are 8 seperate second hands on the clock, I love this effect and would love to do this with my camera. I guess what I am asking is, is this possible with my camera? I have tried using all the different settings for shutter and apeture but I can't seem to get it. Sometimes I just get pure white photos. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hope that helps

You should be able to do this type of shot. You should work in shutter-preferred mode or in fully manual mode. Set the shutter speed you know you want. In shutter preferred mode, the camera will set the aperture to match if it can. Remember that for correct exposure, longer shutter opening will require a smaller aperture. If the camera cannot compensate fully by closing the aperture further, you will get overexposure (the pure white shots are an extreme example of this). Your only choice then is to lower the light level in the scene or use a neutral density filter to further cut down on the light entering the lens.

Dana, your camera can only do a 2 sec. exposure at most according to Steve's Digicam revue.The only solution I can figure here is to take a series of pics and overlay them in photoshop.you will certainly need to use a tripod for exactness and no movement.
Hope this helps.

For the clock hands things, you have to have a clock where the second hand actually ticks from second to second, not one that sweeps, but my guess is that you already know that. You also have to time it perfectly is you want to have an image of the seconds hand for each second of exposure.

The pure white photos seem to indicate that you are working with way too much light. For an 8 sec exposure to come out properly exposed, you are going to have to work with very little light, shooting mostly in the dark.

From what I can gather on dpreview.com about your camera, slowest shutter speed is 2 seconds. That means the longest the shutter will stay open is 2 seconds, so you won't be getting very long light trails from cars at night and will only be able to catch two seconds of movement from the seconds hand on a clock.

Hope this helps.

Another idea, not exactly true to the art is to copy the second finger and paste it as a new image and then alter the angle and copy and paste at every increment you require.To do this you need a little experience of photoshop or similar of course.

2 seconds maximum is correct

But with Image Stacker

//www.tawbaware.com/imgstack.htm

You can get your a 10 second exposure using the self timer and the "top 5" shot mode.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses. I thought that the exposure was Very Short, I am not surprised about it being 2 seconds. I know photohop well but would really like to do this with the camera. I can make any old photo I want in photoshop, I want to capture this on my own. Guess I won't be doing any long exposure shots then... so much for going into the city tonight :( Thanks!

2 seconds can be very difficult to work with, I have seen this with my camera. It requires more effort to create the desired effect. Still doable, just MUCH more difficult.

This is 5''
I don't know 2 sec should give you this effect too, maybe you need to be patient and catch a faster moving car.
