If I send in a lens to Nikon repair, should I use the original lens box? Will they return it?
Or should I just package it in a brown box (and double boxed of course)? |

I would send it in its original box and just stipulate too have it return the same way. |

Why would you send it in the original box?
I'd just send it in cardboard. |

Don't send the original box. It's not required, and it is more likely than not that they will NOT return it even if you specify it on the shipping documents. If you ever decide to sell the lens, not having the box will likely have some effect on the price you can achieve. |

why waste time putting in another box when you already have one? |

Because he'll have to put in another box anyway, and the original packaging adds value if he should ever resell his lens.
Aside from that, what benefit is there in sending it in the original box? You think it'll somehow impress the service technician, and make him do a better job? I try not to do anything that has zero benefit but has potential costs/downsides. (in this case, the loss of the original box due to a careless technician, and the subsequent financial loss at the time of resell) |

Nah, you weren't 'wrong', just a different way of looking at things, and I certainly do appreciate the 'why waste a box' motivation, since our society does generate a huge amount of unnecessary waste.
As for the careless technician - well..... I suspect that it's probably more realistic to hope for a manager and QA tech who aren't careless/clueless. ;) |

The confusion here is that when I sent in my D600, they were very explicit in telling me not to send ANYTHING besides the camera...
I was tempted to pack it as per original, but I double boxed it in two nice brown boxes and it's snug as a bug with all the required paperwork.
$12.50 to ship UPS...will be there in 1 day since it's not far. |

If you do send the original packaging, be prepared to never see it again. Send it packaged well with insurance in a generic box and it will come back the same.

My first 50mm 1.4 (just bought in November, had a bad focus motor/clutch.
Returned that, and got a new one. I quickly tested it and it seemed fine. At least it focused. So I put it away till needed.
Went back to shoot with it, and the focus was off at 1.4 by a lot. I could correct it in camera with the fine tuning (-13 or so!), but then I was also getting some awful CA in my tests.
And my 50mm 1.8D looked great in the same tests. So I decided to send it in for their testing and hopefully adjustment/correction.
It was too late to return it to Amazon, and I had to pay shipping to service, so the sale price is starting to not look so good. And for all the trouble, I wonder why I bothered...especially since I have the 1.8D. Everyone was raving about the 1.8G though, and with the sale price, this one was only a little more. Live and learn!
Maybe I'll be more impressed when I get it back.

Took it over to UPS at 5:15 last night. Regular ground service, $12.50 with $375 insurance.
Arrived already this morning at 11 am.
Granted, it's only a three hour drive away, but that's good service anyway.
