I was happy to see the empty-netter attempt bounce harmlessly off the post toward the end of regulation, as the ref interfered. But then the ref REALLY interfered when they called that slashing penalty in OT. Horrible call that decided the game. The size of the international Olympic rink is so huge as it is. Defending space with three players is impossible. |

That call (a cross check if I recall it correctly) should have been a PENALTY SHOT for interference, not just a penalty. She was breaking away and nearly at her shot when Knight took out her foot.

Exciting game. Although I'm disappointed that the USA didn't win, Canada deserved it. Congrats to our neighbors to the north. |

Damn wish I could've watched it. The perils of having to work for a living. Still, I knew the Canadian girls were going to bring home gold. I know so many girls from ages 8 and up who are playing competitive hockey, and one girl who is already winner of a few Triple S awards. Give her another 8 years and I bet she'll be on the squad! |

Wow, that was an excellent game with both teams putting everything they had into play.
I wish both teams could have won. well, in a way, of course they did, with the Gold and Silver at stake. |

I don't think I've ever seen a more stunned and despairing team at the Olympics than those American girls waiting in a line for the medal ceremony. They couldn't believe they'd let it get away :-( That was a gut-wrenching loss. |

I was also surprised a penalty shot wasn't awarded on that. Weird play, really. She didn't use her stick or grab her, but I guess their feet got tangled up. At any rate, crosschecking was not the correct call.
But I was talking about the slashing call on Lamoureux about a minute before that, when she took a very meek, single swipe at the goalie's pads, because that's what you do when you're following up a shot from the point, hoping for a rebound. At no level of hockey is that a slashing penalty, and far, far worse had transpired earlier in this very same game. That is not a call you make in overtime of the gold medal game.
Basically, the situation with Wickenheiser breaking away like that on a bad solo-skater change doesn't happen if the US isn't down a skater. The US team came out guns blazing in OT, moving the puck very well with the extra space (four skaters instead of five in OT). But their PP was cut short five seconds into it by that horrible call.
I don't expect a Canadian to agree, but try to find some video of it. |

It really was. Their heartbreak was on their faces and it was tough to see -- they played well, but Canada got in their head and that was the game-changer. |

Yeah, we were watching it at work and were pretty surprised at that call as well. Apparently the ref had warned the US team about hacking the goalie earlier in the game though, so the call was most likely due that. Once you get a warning, it isn't going to take much for the ref to make a call. |

ref didn't want to give gold away on a penalty shot, despite the fact that the right call there SHOULD have been penalty shot. Even still, we got our last laugh on the power play as it was |

Actually, the American team had been making slashes and pushes and tiny interferences on the Canadian goaltender all game. Near the end of the third, the US team was very specifically WARNED that if it happened again, they would be penalized. Perhaps Lamoureux didn't take it seriously, or thought she could get away with it if it was small and almost unnoticeable, but that ref meant business. |

Damn right they did! You got to watch out for us Canucks, we lull everyone into a false sense of thinking we're a bunch of big maple-marshmallow softies with our ridiculous amounts of politeness...and then when you least expect it - BAM!
Oh BTW, don't forget to cheer on the Canadian guys Sunday morning when they go head-to-head with Sweden for the gold...yeah baby! |
