So, I think my beloved (and I mean beloved!) 10-22 has bit the dust. Took it out today to shoot for Winogrand (wide is good, right?) and it Errored every time I tried to use it. The error message says the contacts are dirty and to clean them. Clean them I did, repeatedly. Camera body works with the 24-105 and the 100 (the other two I tested it with) but no luck on the 10-22. Sigh. Sniff..... I love that lens!
To get a lens repaired at the Canon facility costs something like $270, flat fee, regardless of problem - including if they can't fix it, I believe. Is it worth trying? Will they replace the contacts? Could it be a "short" of some kind beyond the contacts? Should I just accept the curveball fate has thrown my way and fire up the website for my crack dealer in New York?
Thoughts? |

270 only to check the lens? I'll never complain of Nikon again :)
A friend of mine had his 10-22 falling into the mud while we were taking night shots and had the same error. Canon fixed it for much less than that. |

Maybe I'll check back, but when I took the 24-105 for repair, it was something like that. Canon Europe is probably nicer than Canon southern California.... :-) |

270 to check it?
This is Canon service we're talking about right? Because that's pretty much wildly different from my experiences with them - usually I just box the stuff up, send it in, and then they give me a quote to fix it. |

FYI, I just checked with Canon...
Repair: Estimated Total:$129
I'm thinking the $270 'check it out' fee was something that happened in a nightmare or something.

Maybe the $270 was to fix the 24-105.
I'll see if I can get it down to Irvine in the near future. Lost the opportunity to use it today, which is a bit of a bummer.
It obviously is more than just cleaning the contacts - that's the part I'm wondering about. Where, exactly, might the problem lie?
Do you have a Professional Services account with them, Cory? I do not - wonder if that may be the difference. And it is most definitely NOT under warranty. :-) |

We don't get lower prices with Canon Professional Services, just better turnaround time. |

Ah. I can probably get pretty decent turn around time if I'm willing to drive to Irvine to drop it off and pick it up. Takes some serious conviction to do that during rush hour, however.... :-) |

Eh, just a lens. In the bigger scheme of things, really more of annoyance. But I will always take hugs!!! :-) |

Suggest stuck in traffic, road rage and stand your ground challenges. Four birds, one stone. |
