is it normal to have voted on 734 pictures, and given a average score of 2.88? It seems to me that he's a little unfair...

//www.dpchallenge.com/profile.php?USER_ID=21217

with very few comments explaining his actions...

Maybe they are confused and think "1" is for the best photos. :-)

What is 'normal', and why would voting low be unfair?

I would like to see a new rule where if you vote lower than a 3 or higher than an 8 you would have to comment to register the score. If the shot is that far away from average it should be worthy of comment. I'm tired of getting 1 or 2 on decent shots because people feel they get more power in their opinions by voting everything either 10 or 1

There is something wrong with the stats for that user. Stats indicate he has received 10 comments, but when you check, he has received none.
Stats indicate he has made three comments but actually only made one. He is pretty new to this site, give him a break!

It's completely fair. Maybe he just has high standards and judges everyones photos accordingly. His average low score would support that theory...

My average vote (and score) is pretty low I imagine, though I'm not sure how to check that kind of stuff.

it is a concern when you see his only comment to come up is for the rust challenge

Comment:
Nice composition, color and depth. My favourite in this challenge. 9

even though I agreed with this comment as I rated that photo as my top for the challenge there must be a lot off 1's in there for such a low average

Unfortunately, you can't force people to tell you their opinion. If 1, 2, 9 and 10 required a comment then you'd either get a useless comment like 'sdafafda' or people would just vote between 3 and 8.

I know that as a personal rule, if I rate a photo at 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, or 10, I will comment as to why/what I like/dislike/what I thought was wrong/etc. I really make an effort to do so. I would be afraid that if commenting on extreme scores was made mandatory, it would make it more likely that people would rate a whole lot of 5's just to get through the voting, or voters would make terse, unhelpful comments just to be saying something. Since it is voluntary, I think it allows us to be more free with what we say and how we vote. Of course, I could be wrong...it wouldn't be the first time! :o)

Just means that he's given a few comments in a challenge that's still ongoing and has a photo in one of the challenges. Thats all. ~Heather~

From what I understand, there's some kind of system that looks for odd voting patterns and discards those votes anyway. If the challenge he's voting on is Opposites, I'm not surprised at the low scores. LOL! There are some great entries but, in my opinion, there are some really sad ones.
