Tonight, in response to this thread, I found this video tutorial. //youtu.be/v6IIjtxK7gw
I don't know if the EXIF file is changed. Must be some way to detect this in-camera processing. |
Toward the end of that video he says it creates a new file name, so that should give it away right there. My RAW/JPG files have the same file name. But I'm Nikon and that's Canon, so perhaps things are different. |

I'm watching with bated breath, because I haven't cleared my card. I've reshot, but I like the first ones better. I can save as jpeg without making any changes to it, and it gives it the regular file name.
So what is the consensus? Am I still screwed? |

"Bated breath" has been around a long time. Here's the first cite in the Oxford English Dictionary: "1596 Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice i. iii. 125 'With bated breath, and whispring humblenesse.'"
Otherwise, making a call on this is above my pay grade.

I think I found the answer -- the exif data shows the date created and date modified as different times.
So I doubt that would pass.
Drat!! I froze and took about 333 blurred shots. :(

Are you kidding me????? I shot raw too! :( Checked my data and it is exactly the same in EXIF data. Same time and date. What does it matter anyway, I transfer it to jpg or jpeg and edit in photoshop. So why should that make a difference?? |

If the settings were indeed the same as at the time of exposure, then I think it would still violate the "letter" of the rules, but would be at least somewhat attuned to the spirit ... |

I do think it's a shame that you can't use the RAW without making changes.
Why is that? When you edit a RAW file, it doesn't touch the RAW file (at least not in photoshop.) So you would see if anyone had made changes -- just like in jpeg.
Why is it that we can't submit a RAW to compare against?
(just curious at this point. Because it does seem silly that people can't just use a shot out of camera -- whether it's RAW or jpeg.

Minimal rules are the acme of simplicity: take a picture, resize it straight out of camera with no further processing but sharpening, and submit it. When we bring the ability to work from RAW into the equation we've already added a layer of complexity, because you CAN'T view a RAW image without further processing. And once we open the door to "restricted use" of the RAW processor to prepare a legal image, we are guaranteeing that there will be some people who don't understand what this means and monkey with the settings just a bit.
It's a silly way of doing it. Think of Minimal Editing as working with color slides: that's what we had to do back in the day, and we had to get it right IN THE CAMERA. It's good discipline, and it's good fun. And, to be honest, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for folks who fail to realize until it's too late that the rules are Minimal on a particular challenge: we ALL should be reading these challenge descriptions more closely than that.
FWIW, on my camera I have made a custom mode setting just for this, that shoots RAW + JPG medium and juices up the JPG parameters a little and brackets in bursts of 3. When a Minimal Editing challenge is announced, I spin the Mode Dial to C2 and leave it there until the challenge shooting period is over. That way I get bracketed JPG files on everything I shoot that week, and it's easy as pie to sort 'em by file type and delete the JPGs when I know I don't want them anymore... |

The first thing my eye is drawn to when a challenge is announced is the 'rule set', I don't know why, but it does!
I actually found this great to do in minimal, that way no one can edit it in, I actually think we should do this once a month ha! |

Actually, I think it would completely violate the spirit of the ruleset... which is to set your camera and take the photo. Not take a photo and then play with all the different settings to PP the image in a manner you like.
Totally violates the spirit.
