*Not a rant*
Here is the notice we receive once a year, and ask ourselves, why should I renew it? What's my motivation to renew it after 6,7, 10 years?
Let me guess some of your answers...
1-A nice community
2-Sharing and learning
3-Winning ribbons, excitement
Well, I can do all that just being a registered user!
Here is the dirty little trick, "motivation" is the most important thing in human life to get going. Same things over and over again for years kills motivation, and that's why we redo our hair, color them differently, facial hair, change contact lenses to different colors, change cars, switch girlfriends, boyfriends... if you're married, switch houses, apartment, places, lotion... beds!
Did you notice something that I am trying to help DPC to bring more motivation... actually, I am doing all that for myself so i can enjoy my time here, and same time, I hope some of you will enjoy the changes, new things too...
Motivation... besides "Going forward" for DPC, that's the most important word I believe!
Just sayin! |

I stay for the challenges - I learn from them and they force me to go out and take photos. I enjoy watching the voting and I like when people enjoy my photos. A very cool aspect of the challenges is that I get to look at a lot of photos. With something like 500px or Flickr I don't know where to start whereas here I get to see everything, not only the showcased stuff.
The portfolio section is great, but it just isn't promoted. The portfolios would certainly draw attention if they were. It's a great thing that you need to only be a registered user to view portfolios. |

For me, it's as simple as continuing the enjoyment that I've found here.

I renewed my membership a week ago and the reason is the same as what NikonJeb just wrote. I could have that without being a paying memeber, but the membership offers a bigger choice of challenges, which I consider worth the fee. |

For me there isn't a compelling reason to pay up the money. I can still take part in a challenge and use the forums.
I've been a member twice in my 10 years here. First to be able to take part in a side challenge that was restricted to members only, and then again for the tenth year just because it seemed like a good way to commemorate that 10th anniversary.
I've never seen that membership gains enough benefits to justify the (small) cost incurred.

For me its all about support to the site, this small contribution is my way of saying thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this community and challenge myself against DPC standards (which by the way are really tough!!) |

I stay for the challenges (actual and side) and the forums. I stayed a member even when I did not have time to participate just to keep my portfolio. Not that it's a great portfolio, but it shows the history of my journey in photography. I'll be one of the last ones here, going down with the ship. Even better if it stays afloat! |

I pay as a thank-you note for lessons learned, smiles received and given, and reading the master commenters like Paul, LydiaToo, ubique, tnun and all the others..... |

I chose not to renew. First time since 2006 when I joined.
Why? Because I feel that the community is "Owed" for lack of a better term, something from Langdon if we are asked to continue to support the site. What we get is non responsiveness. I'm sorry but if an owner of a site/business/establishment would like me to continue to be a paying patron. Then I'd like to at least see the wallpaper change now and then, maybe spruce up the bathroom. Show a little interest in your own place. If you aren't interested in it's appearance and operation daily going ons, then why should I be?
I'll stop by on occasion to throw a few jabs in the forums, help some folks out when they ask. But as far as challenges, my life is a bit busy for things like that. And paying to use the forums just doesn't make sense to me.

I was a paying member for a long time but have been registered for a while (I don't know the time split)..... I have a tough time supporting a site that is only hanging together by the people here regardless - not because - of the site itself..... Oh well.... |

As long as this site is 'hanging together by the people here' I'll be one of them. I love the people here, and I love seeing their work, and reading about their ideas and feelings. And, of course, I enjoy participating myself, especially in side challenges, so for me, membership is worth paying for.

I don't at all mind the $25/yr. It's a good value and hopefully enough of us will continue in order to keep the site functioning. It would be like losing family if the site closed down.
The DPC web site is pretty old and creaky now, but WTH, I still happily tool around in a 23 year old Ford Bronco II because it works for me, and I resist change at every opportunity anyway.
My portfolio space is full, so I no longer participate in the side challenges that I enjoyed. My daily photos are posted elsewhere now.
Maybe someday I will get the urge to ante up for more portfolio space and get back into the side challenges for the human interaction value and to continue learning more about shooting. |

I renewed because I was all excited about one of the challenges that came up as my membership was due. I had a blast shooting for it. Really enjoyed getting out with my camera. Failed miserably in the challenge and my average is dropping every year now, but I paid up anyway. Kinda wish I hadn't but hey, it is what it is! |
