Greetings all,
Help me understand how the Challenge was "meant". (Site Council input appreciated).
As I read the task:
Your challenge is to find something rusted, and then look for ways to compose an interesting picture around it.
The word compose here leads me to believe it was not just a good image of rusty things/something rusty (and there were MANY great shots!), but rather a story. A great shot of a rusty "something" with a good title helped, but was still just that. I see 3 or 4 of those in the top 10.
Anything is a composition. The image is composed, but was an interesting picture composed around it?"
I know my submission Rust never sleeps. (now we know why) was composed. Granted the border was way too big and the amount of rust present was low (decades of doing it's work shows), but it was true to the theme.
I see many good shots that were simply not composed, yet scored much higher overall.
I'm not sour by any means, I simply need to understand how wide the lattitude is when members score on a challenge: Wow, that's a great picture: Score 9. Oh forgot about composing - oh well, it's still a great picture. Socre 9 (or similar...)
My hat's off to so many great photographers here. I Wish I wasn't limited to what my Olympus E-10 can do, straight out of the box. |

First, I didn't vote on many of the rust challenge entries, including yours.
The odd thing I notice is how many 1's, 2's and 3's you got. That seems disproportionate for this shot. My guess is that these people didn't see the rust, and scored you as not meeting the challenge.
The shot looks good technically, except for the bright reflections on the handle and what appears to me to be a slightly soft capture of the metal.
I think with so many entries, people didn't stop long to look. I can see how they might miss the rust here, or feel that this isn't very rusted.
BTW - I like your idea, and in fact, that's what I wanted to do, "Rust Never Sleeps = False". I wanted to do it with a very rusty railroad spike, and put it in a doll bed. Unfortunately, I had neither. Mine was going for just humor though, and I like the combination you picked from an artistic, aesthetic point of view. So I'm glad I never found my parts! |

I like your shot as well. I personally thought my rusty fondue forks in the marshmellow would have done better too. I thought the colors were vivid and the subject was funny and gross at the same time! Oh well, just goes to show my sense of humor didn't mesh with most of the DPC voters. :) It was fun though. I also tried to compose a picture around the rust to tell a story... about eating fondue with rusty forks... just imagine what that would do to you? Haha. Anyhow, I really like your photo, good job!

My interpretation of the challenge was to find something rusty and take make it into something interesting. Not necissarily studio shots. I had my choice of lots of rusty things. But most were JUST photos of rust, nothing really interesting about them at all. I like your shot and would have scored it highly. I finished with my 3rd highest percent ever (84%) And the only 'composing' I did was to add the little dandelion, which in fact may have hurt cause it was too bright.
I didn't take 'composing' to mean create. I took it to mean 'make it interesting'. |

I was very open to interpretation in this one when voting. I took the picture with my own interpretation and voted as if everyone was correct as long as there was rust in the photo. Then I scored and commented on quality, interest, composition, clarity, light, contrast, etc...
:) I am going to go check out your photo. I want to see who took some of my favorite shots.

I thought your photo was great
I gave it an eight
I think Heather explained my thoughts as well. Sometimes I wonder how literal the interpretation is supposed to be. I was mostly looking for good composition (and rust at least somewhere in the picture).

ps ... Heather, you got screwed ... I gave you a 10, that photo rocks! |

My intrepretation of any given challenge perameter requires me to ask my self - does a picture include some context to the challenge or make reference to the challenge description in some way? I usually take note that in my opinion it does or it does not, and not worry about it too much, after that wholly unreliable mental determination, the photo itself is certianly the only reasonable basis for casting a vote. I love your E10 pictures... your work with the camera is excellent. It can shine as a studio camera, (as shown in your very good contribution to rust), and has one of the best and brightest single lens view finders around. You would actually be disappointed in the view provided by some newer slr's. Not the easiest or fastest camera to use but is still a very capable machine. |
