because I came home from work tonite and my photo directory on my hard drive is gone. My kid tried to insall a game and it went bad. My wife did something to try and get the system back up but is basically computer illiterate and can only do what Windows recomends. Have know idea what they did.
I haven't been making regular backups because Windows Media Player 9 wacked my Nero's Burning software. The only way to get Nero's to work properly again is to reformat and reinstall Window. I didn't wanna do this cause I had no good way to back up all my photo files (Nero's kind of works, but thanks to Microsoft deciding you need burning capabilities in Media Player there's a huge conflict).
Now I've lost hundreds of shots (mostly crap I know because I'm a photo pack rat), my .PSD files and ALL MY PRINT FILES!!! Most files were from old camera (no big loss, if I ain't worked on 'em by now...) But I did lose a couple of hundred snaps from my Rebel, including several that I was actively working on.
Bottom line is backup backup backup! |

Doh! Comes to mind. I think we would all collectively turn our heads if you wanted to have a "talk" with your family.

| With all the crap that they did when I wasn't here, I honestly think I'm screwed... I'm waiting for a call back from a friend who knows someone who may be able to do data recovery for me... |

I can't honestly blame them though. I knew I needed to back up! |

The way it works around here is I don't get mad if I don't back up and ** I ** make a mistake that erases the data. If somebody ** else ** makes the mistake all hell is going to break out. Then again, I don't share well so she has her own computer. |

That freaking sucks. Windows Media Player 9 is been acting up for me too.
I automatically backup after taking shots because I only have a 3GB hardrive. Old @$$ pentium II. I learn my lesson when I lost all my pictures for the first 2 years I had my camera, before I bought a CD-R and I know how it feels. |

My first post here!!! Anyway, try getting one of the less known burning software. Try something like CDRWin //www.goldenhawk.com. They seem to work for me when Nero goes on holiday. It might not be something you like to use but hey, if it saves a few files before you have to reformat I guess it'll help!
HTH! |

I've wanted to do that all along, but I have to jump through hoops to get Nero's to burn, and even then it errors out at the end and I have to reboot to burn the next disk. I guess that Media Player uses the Roxio burning engine and Roxio and Nero's don't play well together... |

| Check to see if your computer has a "Go back" feature. I belive that windows xp might have it (either that or it just came on my computer) Basically what it does is restores your computer to a specific date and time in the past. I've had to use it a few times when I've deleted things I shouldn't have. I even used it to 'go back' about a month before I got a certain program on my computer that seemed to be screwing everything up. It is something to look into anyway. ~Heather~ |

Not an option. I'm running Windows 98se. Bad part, no go back feature, good part, no one bothers to write worms for 98 anymore! |

| At least 98se is easy to peer to peer so you can have a friend bring over their computer, install the data recovery software on it, hook the two together, and try to recover the data off your drive. |

You may have to PM me with instructions on hooking together. That may be an option... |

Do you by chance have a gateway? I had 98 on my gateway, and it had goback too. But it was called Gateway GoBack, so it is a gateway feature rather than a windows thing. |

| That I guess is another few options. Depending on how computer literate you are and how much you want the photos, worse case just pull out the hard drive and stick it into another computer and copy the files off it. Or upload them all to somewhere (could take a while though....) |

Move to Windows XP Professional and setup seperate user accounts with no installation or 'mess up the computer' rights for anyone but the Administrator account...
When you install an application as Administrator give the rights to read, write and execute that application to the users you need/want to read/write/execute the application and associated files and the chance of this happening in the future can shrink down to almost nil...
Backups are cool, having several user accounts with differing rights and completely seperate user files alongside backups is cooler...
I feel for you. I made the mistake of providing read/write rights to some younger family members on the 'play server' I had setup and lost all kinds of irreplaceable files.
Eh... Such is life. A series of lessons to learn. |

| If it's really worth it to you to recover the data on that hard drive you can contact Ontrack and see if they can help you...they specialize in data recovery, but it will cost you big bucks. |

| How dreadful! You might be able to recover them though. I downloaded a program from the internet called Photorescue and recovered all the photos my son lost on a Compact Flash Card. You can direct this program to recover pictures from any drive - it might work on the hard drive as well as on a card. |

Good lesson and wake up call for many photographers. I know I just backed up last week (or was it two weeks?)

do you have another computer?
I have done this in the past for someone else.
Take you hard drive out and put in another computer as
slave drive. Then boot back up, windows should recognize this as
additional storage space. then you should be able to go into
your hard and retrieve files. I mean sure windows on your computer
is probably screwed, but you should still be able to pull your files
of that drive! |

Before you do anything more to it, take it to a reputable shop. Sure the friend of a friend might be able to help (in similar situations I have been that guy), but that depends on your opionion of your friends ability to know computer skill when (s)he sees it.
A couple of things to consider.
If you can not get the system to bootup at all, the data is likely still there. If you need to you might be able to get it up well enough to get the data off by entering 'safe mode' (press and hold F8 while booting), but your burning software may not work in that mode.
If the system boots normally, but the folder you kept you photos in is not there; shut down the system immediately! Do not shutdown with the StartMenu, hit the button on the console. The long and short of it is that there are programs (most shops will have them) that allow you to unerase files, but the success depends on the area of the disk not having been used again for other files (even temporary ones). The more you use the system (even just browsing the web, even just having it on depending on what you have running), the more chance of the area the photos were is going to be over-written.
