Don't get me wrong, I'm still a Nikon fan, but after owning my D100 since July of 2004 and 8,000 photos later, I think I'm allowed to grind a tooth in Nikon's direction.

1.) Technology - They are followers. This is at the core of one of the company's primary problems. It is also one of the key reasons Pro's continue to make the shift to Canon. They make great glass, and their SLR bodies are feature rich, but going forward I don't see a rosie picture in front of me.

I am not even in the business, but I can draw a clear path where Nikon needs to be 8-12 months from now, and I don't see them getting there.

Example - I am ready to step my DSLR body up a notch from the D100. I have purchased some of Nikon's larger lenses, and the fit on the D100 just isn't there. What do I mean? I mean the additional battery pack for the d100 is a 'hack' at best, and the lack of a large single body construction is unacceptable.

What are my two choices. The D2H and the D1x. The D1x is 3year old technology. Three years in the technology space is a lifetime. The D2H is their latest entry, and appears to be a solid competitor for Sports and Photojournalist, but has a 4MP chip. 4MP??? -- Hey guys, Sony has an 8MP chip set out in the F828 for $999.00 - Get with the program!

To upgrade my body, I either go back 3 yrs in technology, or move forward to last year's entry with a smaller chip than the camera I bought nearly two years ago. Get the picture?

2.) DX line of lenses - Basically, Nikon is drawing a line in the sand, and screwing their analog and digital customers in the process. Unbelievable........ truly unbelievable.

3.) Supply - They have extraordinary supply chain issues. For a company to have supply issues in this day in age, it is either lying to customers to artificially inflate prices, or has no clue how to manufacture it's own goods and distribute them.

4.) Software - They have not reached out to engineers to help with batch processing, or other tools to help streamline workflow.

Individual complaints on the D100 (I love the camera, but...)

Blows out highlights @times
Body construction (Does not support larger lenses)
No RAW mode w/JPEG
Compressed RAW mode buffer -- SLOW, crazy slow
Nikon MB-D100 Multi-Function Battery Pack is a hack
Supports only two memory shooting modes (Bank A or B)

There you have it, my chief complaints about Nikon. Again, I am still a fan, and I love my camera. I am just ready to move on and Nikon is not there to meet me.

Well... one alternative would be a Fuji body... and then there's always the dark side... :D

That was a mistake according to me. Adding Megapixels just means that every pixel gets less light and therefore has more noise. They went to quickly with the 8MP not being able to deliver all those pixels at an equivalent quality as the 717.

Ah - the age old story. I've used Nikons for YEARs - since the FM2 days. I now have the D100 (as well as F100's, N90's). Guess that fully qualifies me as an "old one."

I agree with DJLuba's comments - but I think there may be a bigger issue for me here. That is - the manufacturers REFUSAL to standardize on lens mounts. For me to change to Canon at this point would be a MAJOR investment - and I'm not "that" unhappy with Nikon.

Way back in the early PC days - there was a myriad of proprietory systems, but they managed to standardize on two platforms, PC and MAC. Why won't the camera folks do the same thing? It would LOWER the cost of making lenses and make things more convenient for @ - including Nikon, Canon, Pentax......

That's what the Four Thirds system is supposed to address...

Yeah, 4/3 might have been a great idea if it came out 2 years earlier. It may even be an ok idea now but if you were Canon or Nikon would you really want to give up your locked in customers and have to fight with everyone on a more or less level playing field?

And therein lies the catch... if you have little market share you have nothing to lose, and much to gain by joining 4/3. But if you are Nikon or Canon, you have quite a lot to lose, and not a lot to gain. Besides, Canon seems to be migrating toward full-frame 35mm, which path I personally prefer; I'll take the extra weight/size in exchange for the additional sensor size.

I can see a smoke screen of support from both, but in reality, they'll be working on ways to break out of the system. I can't see them absorbing this internally without putting up a fight.
