whats gonna happen when megapixels in cameras reach 50 or 60. I mean, a 1ds has 11 megapixels and a full frame 24x36 sensor. The sensor cant get any bigger, so whats gonna happen when the megapixels go up?

the image cast by the lens. If a small sensor like the 10d gets 1.6 of the lens image, and the 24x36 gets 1x of the lens image, then a bigger sensor will get like .8 of the image put on the sensor produced by the lens.

Everything and anything can become bigger, that's the way our world works. I remember thinking, "What are they going to use after MegaHertz (MHz) on processors?" Because surely, how could they get any faster than that?

Yes a bigger sensor may not make sense if you want to stick to a 35mm format but then there is medium format and large format and formats we haven't even dreamed of yet. |

heh, i think a dSLR is expensive, whats a large format digital gonna cost?

| My guess (hope?) is that we'll see sensors with more dynamic range. Imagine two interlaced 6MP sensors, one of which is a couple stops more sensitve than the other. Fuji is already doing something similar to this. I can't see much of a need for 12MP, at least not in a consumer type digicam, but a 6MP camera where you can get the shadows and highlights correctly exposed without having to think about it - that's something that will really improve a lot of people's photography. |

Aren't there already medium format digital backs that have much larger CCDs than the full format Canon 1Ds CMOS sensor? Aren't they something like $15 - $20K?
