I don't see any reason for a "Does not fit the challenge" comment on any shot this week.

Funny, all my comments are "does not meet" and "I don't belive you didn't take pictures of a ... before". Well not only that I didn't but if I browse the submissions I guess you can say that to everyone. What amazes me always on this site is the amount of paranoya going on. It's like nobody can be trusted, they all cheaters and liars. I wonder what kind of unhappy childhood some had... They all say the shot is verry good so I guess my 5.5 score is only because the subject is so common and nobody belives I never took pictures of it before. Well I didn't. :P

Where are we getting the idea that you can`t have taken this "TYPE" of picture before???
The challenge says that you can`t have "ENTERED" this type of picture before to a previous challenge.

I am only beginning to realize how heavily and precisely "meets challenge" is weighed in most people's votes. It seems to be a common idea here that I hadn't viewed in the same way when I first came on.

My photo has been done many times before, but its new to me. I didn't get any bad comments about it :)

Exacly. Well I took it further and submit something I never even shot before and people still don't belive it. I'm telling you this has a name. Paranoya.

I guess I'm just feeling a little more lenient than most of the voters we've come in contact with thus far for Something New II...for this challenge I have given out:

one 10
three 9's
eight 8's
thirty-four 7's
fifty-nine 6's
fifty-five 5's
twenty 4's
five 3's
one 2

The bulk of my votes were at or above average (86% if I did the math right)...I thought there were a lot of REALLY nice shots, and I believe in my heart that people are good, fair, and are not submitting shots like ones that have been submitted by them in the past. I haven't had time to make many comments yet, but I'm working on it throughout the week. Keep your chins up, people...it's only Tuesday! :o)

Your scores are just what you think and that is ALWAYS right!

For example, mine was a narrow range this time around for what looked like a pretty good group of images. Here are the scores I gave:

0 - tens (I was tempted to make one a 10 and still might)
3 - nines (My top three challenge picks)
3 - eights
26 - sevens
91 - sixes
73 - fives
14 - fours
1 - three
0 - twos
0 - ones

And I didn't lower anybody's score for failing to meet the challenge! :)

I was submitted for DQ and I don't know why. And I think my photo will be DQ'd sadly. I batch all my images to change the file name, but I never thought that would hurt the original. Turns out, it does (since I used Photoshop to do it), and now I am screwed. I don't have a single image taken with a Digital Camera that has not been batched through PS. So, I have "no" original images. I need to find a new method. Sad, so sad. Say goodbye to my photo in Something New II. I'll tell you which one it is once it's DQ'd officially.

Bummer! What I do after taking a series of shots is I prune out the ones i don't like, keep the ones I do in a separate folder then make copies of the ones I'm considering for submission for editing and stuff. This way you have an original that's untouched.

I don't just use my photos for challenges or that would be a great idea. I have a limited amount of storage space and don't want too many duplicates. I usually only duplicate the ones I want to put on my website (and I also shrink those down to 475px wide or tall). That's like 10 of 100 photos. The rest are just renamed and edited (the originals are edited after the challenge).

I don't like to keep originals, make copies and edit the copies. Perhaps I should, but that's a lot of file space. I usually just wait to see if I will be entering a challenge, then I'll edit the originals to suit my liking (cleaning and curves, cropping, etc). I know we don't have 'negatives' and so my original is totally gone after that. But, what I want is the final photo anyhow. I am sure some of you think I am crazy. :) Heehee. I don't yet sell my work (other than a few photos on DPCprints) and even those are edited originals.

Oh well. So, anyhow, how'd everyone feel about going out to photograph something in a place they've never taken pictures before? Was it hard? It was hard for me. I had to get very specific and find a particular location in a city I had been to, but had never taken places in that location before. It was hard to think of! :)

I can promise you that one day you will regret this decision. I used to dump the original files due to lack of storage space and I've since come to regret it numerous times when I look at a photo I love and realize it I resized it too small for a good print, or compressed the quality too much. We eventually replaced the hard drive in our PowerMac G3 and now have tons of storage space. An external hardrive is a fairly inexpensive purchase these days, also. If your computer has a cd-writer (another inexpensive purchase these days) you can dump quite a lot of originals on a 700 MB disc.

If you don't have a CD, or better, a DVD burner, I'd invest in one of them as soon as you can along with some good recording software like Roxio's Easy CD Creator (assuming you have a PC). You can store all your originals on a disc for archive purposes. At the moment, mine are scattered across multiple internal and external hard drives. One of these days, I'll get the guts to actually practice what I preach and archive everything. Just something to think about with my $0.02. :)

This is the way it should be. It's also stated in the rules to take the challenge theme into consideration when voting. But for this challenge, think it's different for reasons stated in previous replies to this thread.

One suggestion I might make is what I do when I find a picture I like and want to submit for a challenge. I have made a folder on my desktop strictly for DPC original files. When I dump my memory stick into the computer, I go through each picture at length. When I find "the one," I immediately move it into that folder on the desktop. Then I use it to edit and "save as" into a second desktop folder, which is my edited DPC files. This way I have the original and the edited version right where I can find them, and if I want to do away with the others in the file where they are dumped to out of the camera, I can delete at will. Thanks!

I have been doing just that all morning. :) I've freed up about 20GB on my hard drive so far. I keep the RAW files of almost every photo I take. I'm backing them up on CDs and DVDs. Digital photos sure take up a lot less space then film prints!

Once you start doing backups on CD, I highly recommend a program called whereisit. You can download a trial copy from the web.

I have a huge number of CDs and DVDs for backup, and I've been using this program to catalog them for years. Among other things, it will compare a HD or subpath on a HD to your catalogs and show you what's new, what's already backed up. This is important if you, like me, backup/archive files but don't throw everything away.

It can thumbnail images of all types, including PSD and RAW (at least my Canon files), and it uses disc serial numbers to tell them apart, so it can tell you if you've inserted a disc you already indexed.

Highly recommended. //www.whereisit-soft.com/

No affiliation with the company: I'm just a very happy user.

I just wanted to address something that was said a while back about not posting comments on entries. Sometimes I just don't have anything to say if it's a really bad photo. I really do try to look for something good in every entry just to point out what I think that person did well but sometimes I just draw a blank on comments and just vote. One time I left constructive criticism and the person didn't find it useful so it's almost a "why bother" when it comes to leaving comments. As a matter of fact, all the comments that were a criticism were not marked as useful but only the positive ones were. I guess this type of person is not interested in personal growth but rather just the positive comments.

(fixed typos)

Archiving is exactly why I never keep my originals on CD or DVD. I have both burners. I just can never ever find a photo when I want it if it's not on my hard drive. I will have to check out this whereisit program (if it's cheap or free) and if it works, then I can start burning to DVD. Being a records manager, I am also painfully aware of how media changes every 7 to 10 years so that's another reason I haven't burned to DVD yet. Who knows how long they will last? What if a disk got scratched? What do you all do to make sure you don't lose your great images and how on earth do you find them off of a dvd if you don't have whereisit software? I need to check this software out tonight!

I don't ever shrink my originals by the way. I know Melismatica mentioned that I may end up with photos too small for a good print. I never resize them more than a crop I would need for a good print anyhow. I just clean the dust off of them and adjust the curves as necessary. I would never resize the entire photo for my 'keeper' file. :) I used to do lots of darkroom printing, and when I would blow up an image, I'd 'always dodge and burn. I'd never keep the original print if there were scratches or dark patches... always the 'best image'. :)

I know you said you had limited storage space. Why not just keep the original for the week of the challenge, then toss it? You'll kick yourself if one day you have a ribbon winning image and you've got no EXIF data.

It was fun going to shoot something I hadn't done before. Got me out of my comfort zone!

Yeah, I am definintely keeping em for the week of the challenge from now on! :)

I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone, but I couldn't bring myself to go to the fish market, practically the only place in the city I haven't been! Haha

I need about 50 to vote 10 to bring me to 6 :P
Laurie, left your comments yet? I don't have one from you on my "new" submission. :P

Well...I did comment on 30 images...the ones I gave 1's, 2's, 3's, 8's, 9's, and 10's...so if you didn't get one then you know it must be a 4 to a 7. I had a hard time even VOTING on 443 entries, much less commenting on all of them. I will try to do better next time. :o)

Maybe I can run through them again in the next couple of hours and try to leave some more comments. I've been lazy, I guess. I shall repent!!

LOL, I was talking about the "something new" challenge, not the Rusted challenge where I already have 16 comments!

Sorry...it's been one of those days for me!!!!!!!!

I haven't gotten around to comments on this challenge yet. I'll procrastinate until oh, next weekend or so. LOL!

Just to be safe, I suggest keeping them for a couple of weeks after the challenge too. After this point you should be safe.

Well, my entry in this challenge totally bombed (65th percentile or 66/187). It seems my skills are not improving but going downhill at the moment. And even my entry in the "Centered Composition" is doing WAY worse than my Fire extinguisher entry ever did and no comments yet. I know the voting just started so I'll wait a bit before I complain again. :)
05/17/2004 06:33:49 AM · #125
Well, I'm stuck in the 78th percentile rut, so to speak (same percentile on the last couple of challenges). I thought this picture would have done a little better, but oh well. Thanks to you guys who commented...such wonderful compliments and encouragement. I appreciate it!!! (gush gush) :o)
