i know we've had challenges along the line of "100 Year Old Or More"
what is "ancient" defined as?
i could see Stonehenge or maybe a fossil, but what else?
...if it isn't obvious, i'm fishing for inspiration ;-)

I was wondering the same. Different people have different definitions, and it really is all relative. As pixelpig said, some consider last year's technology ancient. A 12 year old might consider me ancient. Others may get more literal in their voting. I know the subject I'm thinking of photographing falls under definition #3 below, but pleanty of people wouldn't consider it "ancient", just "old".
an·cient 1 (nshnt)
adj.
1. Of great age; very old.
2. Of or relating to times long past, especially those of the historical period before the fall of the Western Roman Empire (a.d. 476). See Synonyms at old.
3. Old-fashioned; antiquated.
4. Having the qualities associated with age, wisdom, or long use; venerable.
n.
1. A very old person.
2. A person who lived in times long past.
3. ancients
a. The peoples of the classical nations of antiquity.
b. The ancient Greek and Roman authors. |

Me.I definitely qualify.
ETA:
A challenge topic like this should encourage diverse interpretations, and as pointed out, there are multiple definitions for "ancient." There seem to be an almost infinite number of ideas that might be generated from this topic.

Ancient is a highly specific word. If you're going to photograph some old object, you better put the carbon-dating results next to it and it had better be at least 1600 years old, but not too old to where it's prehistoric.
For you camera geeks, is there any carbon-dating information in the EXIF data? Maybe we can DQ photos that are not ancient? |

Naw, you're just a youngster, Fritz!
Still, we could explore geology, civilizations that have been around for a long time,
even religious symbols, besides of course, those "old" folks and cats. |

My wife often says the way I speak my language is 'ancient'... not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. |

"The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea,
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
Now fades the glimmering landscape on the sight,
And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,
And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds;
Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tower
The moping owl does to the moon complain
Of such, as wandering near her secret bower,
Molest her ancient solitary reign..."
Anybody got an owl handy? |
