I'm just a little bit worried right now...it's 12am and I won't be able to see a doctor until tomorrow afternoon...so I just thought I would ask here see if anyone has some advice.

I'm doing a program called MI40, it's intense. The tempo of the lifts and lifting until the muscle is fatigued is the important part of the program (If you Google MI40, you can get more on it, it's pretty insane). Anyways, today was quads and calves. Went through my first 2 exercises without issue. Then I got to exercise 3, leg press, which is really easy when you're lifting for strength only, but this routine is for size, not strength. During the negative portion of the lift, on my 2nd set, low weight, I felt this pain from the back of my knee go down my leg to my ankle and a little up my hamstring (Left side only). I've never had this feeling before.

I stopped, walked a bit, started back but 1 rep and I felt the pain again so I stopped. I took a bit of a breather, stretched a bit (Not something you should do mid-routine) and went onto lunges. I decided that if there was pain, I would stop my quad portion of the exercise, but there was no pain. Then I moved on to calves and they were fine. Not sure what happened. At home, after some dinner, I pushed away from the table with my feet and felt a bit of the same pain in my left leg, behind my knee. I'm not sure if it's just a strain or something worse (Which would SUCK). I hope I don't wake up in the morning with a swollen leg/knee. I have work in the morning and will see my doctor in the afternoon. Tomorrow is an 'off day' from the gym (1 of only 2 I get for the week)

I did a couple of one-legged hops to see if I could narrow down the pain location, but there's no pain when I do that. Body squats, no pain...I have no idea what's happening.

Pain running down the back of the leg can be from inflammation/irritation of the sciatic nerve, and often has its origin in the lower back (where the nerves exit the spinal column. Make sure they check your back as well as your leg in trying to assess the problem. Good luck!

I agree with GeneralE. Your doc should check your back as well, you do NOT want to mess with your knees. I remember from my gym-membership days (a bazillion years ago) how guys would be working their legs like crazy in order to develop size, only to watch them hobble off to the showers afterwards. You may have to scale down to a less demanding exercise regime if you want to get fit and some size but also stay sound!

With the sciatic nerve, wouldn't the pain start up behind my butt?

The way the routine is built is to keep you muscle under constant tension. This means a lower weight overall, otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it. I've had to cut the weight by about 2/3 of what I can normally lift. So during the last set the weight, had I gone in and done it normally the first time, would've been so easy that you'd think it was a joke. But because for the first 3 sets, the muscle is under constant tension (No rest at the top or bottom of the set, 4 second controlled negative) the knee doesn't have much as far as weight to deal with.

I would have also thought it was back but that would be if I wasn't paying attention to form while on the press...my form was perfect, butt down, never left the seat, back straight, looking up.

Still, I will mention what you said about the sciatic nerve to the doctor. It's morning now, the pain is still there, more localized in the knee why I turn it to the side. More 'pain' when I stepped on a pillow and didn't have 'proper' support while standing. Less in my leg and more in around the knee. I hope it's neither a back or knee issue...hope it's just inflammation of 'something'...

Thanks for the replies...nice to wake up and see people answering...

Yes, and most likely inflammation of the Sciatic nerve. It can manifest itself ion many ways. I know, because I suffer from it periodically.

You have identified the cause, now stop it.

To Heavyj

...and you best hope that any sciatic problems are due to some form of pinching and not neurological in nature.

I was diagnosed with an irritated sciatic nerve a few years back (neurological) which made my legs contract at night to the point that for a long period of time I could not walk at all.

Luckily for me, I can now walk (except on slopes) but it is slow and painful.

The best of luck to you.

Alright...I woke up today and my knee was feeling much much better. I still went to the doctor and still expected to get an MRI. Doctor said that, after a physical examination of my knee, I probably rubbed too far into the 'soft' stuff in the knee (The way he explained it in Japanese) and that that caused the type of pain I experienced. There was no need for an MRI but he said that if after 2 weeks I had any lingering pain then we could get one done. He also said that inflammation the next day was normal, which is why I still felt it day 2. He cleared me to do hamstring workouts but asked that I leave the squats alone for 2 weeks. Hamstrings still need the knee to move to get a full contraction, but I had no pain today.

I sat in the leg press with no weights, just to see how it felt on my leg. There was no pain. I also re-read some of my routine and think I applied improper technique which caused my knees to buckle. Anyways, leg is fine, no real pain, just a bit up the quads and down the calf, but that could also be DOMS. Had my back and hamstring workout today, felt great. Tomorrow is shoulders and triceps. I'll probably end up getting some bands for my legs during those knee-necessary lifts. But 2 weeks, no quad exercises...sucks...but doesn't...

I will update if things get worse or better...thanks for chiming in everyone!
