Maybe I will be better at telling a story. Hey, wait up...

looking at the entries, anyone else have the sense we have a large cohort of photo class students in this challenge?

i'm a bit amazed at the number of shots that many would consider DNMC in this one

Hehehe, it's been a while since our last "photography class scandal"! Haven't looked at the challenge yet, but I'll check it out.

Regarding my entry, it's most decidedly black on black, and only 5.6....

A photography class who get asked to do black on black for a project? I hope not.

The challenge description had a bit of a typo, the word "a" shouldn't be there IMO. If voters are requiring the images to fit it as written then there are a lot of DNMC.

"Take a photo in which the background is black and the subject is predominately a black as well."

Did I miss something...I thought this was to be Black on Black...not a "BLACK & WHITE" (converted photo)...I will say that I love how some have nailed finding an item/thing that is "truly black" and "photographing that on black"...

I read the challenge description as take a photo of a predominantly black subject on a black background.
I will look for the black background with a dark and interesting subject. I'm not sure it matters how it got there.

Please take care in current challenge threads to avoid mentioning too many specific details of any entry during voting -- we do not want actual or perceived skewing of results. Thank you!

If it's my post you're referring to, may you please tell me what I said that referred to any specific detail of any entry because I thought I was only talking about the challenge description in general. Thanks.

@ Mark - I'd have to agree that there seem to be a preponderance of a particular type of image in this challenge, reminiscent of those photography class entries. Although I have to say, the quality of these is much better :)

So voters want to see a black background with a black subject - lets say zone 0, being pure black.
They don't want to see a B&W conversion, no other colour present, no reflection of light - because a reflection of light on black is no longer black...
Therefore a pure black background with a pure black subject would be what they want.

Zone 1 is black with a slight tonality but without details.
Zone 1 would still result in a dark plane on the screen with a subject hardly visible. You would think at first that the screen is simply black and after a while you just might see a tiny bit of "something"

Zone 2 shows very slight details.
Zone 2 would result in a black background with visible traces of the subject but difficult to define features.

Zone 3 would show details and features of the subject. In other words, zone 3 would be a photograph with a black background and a visible subject.
But, zone 3 is defined as dark grey with a visible texture. So, if you want to show a black subject on a black background, your subject needs to be at least zone 3 or dark grey to make is visible for the viewer.

Taking this in consideration, voters can only hand out a high(er) score on a complete black screen.
From the moment the subject is visible, it is no longer black but dark grey with texture.
If this is what they're doing, than all photographs with a visible subject in stead of a pure black screen are DNMC.

I know, odd way of thinking and surely completely wrong approach. Hence my score.

I do not think the score is not higher because I DNMC. I think it's not higher because I DNMI (Did Not Make Interesting).

TOTALLY agree with the last statement... no kids jumping in the air, no out of focus desks or scissors, etc. they are very nicely composed in general.

just wondering if the influx of "students" is affecting the voting, them thinking that voting images down across the board will help their own scores/placement (and if they know what their "classmates" submitted)?

If that's true, then the pattern will be quite clear quickly, and SC will deal with it. (in a few weeks.) ;)

It was the general discussion stemming from the post you quoted -- No difficulties with your posts. Sorry for the confusion!

I was only trying to find a possible explanation for the voting behaviour versus the gross of images in the challenge and the challenge description in case this last one was taken literal by the voters.

Wont do it again, sorry.
My score is in the range I predicted it would be, so there's not a real surprise to me.

this is just a typical mid-week challenge voting pattern, relax everyone, you should know that by now, at rollover whoever is low now, should be at least somewhere between .20 and .80 higher, go now and find something better to do, like vote on the Free study :)

edited to add, and having said that I dropped .08 LOL!!
