So normally when you go out shooting on a vacation, how many pictures do you take? Do you just keep shooting anything and everything or be very very selective? And in the end how many of them do you actually feel are really good and worth processing? In percentage, what's your hit rate? |

I don't shoot a lot of views, so my retention is generally pretty good. If you don't count the fact that I do every shot in burst mode (3 bracketed exposures), I'd bet most of the time I end up with 25% or more processable images. |

I find when I'm on dedicated photo holidays, I take more than on a regular vacation and the hit rate is around 20%. When I'm on typical tourist holidays I take fewer images but the hit rate is probably a bit higher (around 30%). On the dedicated photo holidays there are more duplicates (you know the sort, the same view from 20 million different angles!)
I find I take between 100 and 200 a day, process 20%-30% and then only share (website/Facebook) the best 20 from the whole holiday.

I don't take dedicated photo vacations*, but I try and take photos whenever I'm traveling. I think my processing rate is way lower than other folks are getting, maybe 5-10%, but that's mitigated by several factors: I take a lot of source images intended for stitching into panoramics (3-20 frames/set), and a lot of pictures while moving (planes, trains, and automobiles) which end up too blurry to print, or at least need major processing to "rescue". Since my 6MP camera only saves in JPEG (files are usually under 3MB) I can shoot a lot without worrying about storage space.
*Well, I have been on a couple of photo excursions with Bear, in 2008 and again in 2011, and I'd say my hit rate was a bit higher on those (not all process-worthy photos here ...).

I'm on vacation every day, unless work comes in the way :) Final result: one, and only one for my blog (but every day again). I don't keep statistics. It varies between 1 and 500 I guess. |

it depends, if im doing a paid shoot its pretty good, if im doing a TF shoot where i'm mainly practicing a new technique or trying new poses or lighting setup its much, much lower.

I take far fewer photos when on vacation, my family probably thinks I take far too many. I've never been on a vacation dedicated to photography. My early digital cameras would impose a limit (battery, storage) on how many shots I could take, my hit rate was low and gets lower as time goes on. My hit rate on shots taken 7 years ago is maybe .01% today. Today the limit for shots taken is not imposed by my gear but by time & endurance. My hit rate is determined only by my interest in my own work. It varies. Like others, I take as many (slightly) different shots of the same subject as I can think of. I have better skills in processing to go with my better skills in shooting, to go with a stronger sense of what I'm looking for. My awareness of what's a good shot in the field has improved, so sometimes my finger is ready, but I don't like what I see so I don't shoot.
For me, there's a difference between selecting the best of the bunch at the time, and recognizing a keeper years later.
An interesting related question might be, how many shots would be in the gallery if you were selecting from the last 5 years for a retrospective exhibit?

I don't know about vacation -- I really seem to stink at vacation shots. I guess it's because I don't feel like I can take a lot of time taking photos while my family is sitting around waiting (although I do anyway -- but I guess I don't do well under stress!)
But just in general -- I take WAY too many pictures. I'll take 30 shots of the same thing with only slightly different angles, just to try to get it right. The problem is I don't change it up enough in between, and I save too many of the same shot. I'm continually filling up hard disks.
But the thing is -- out of the 30, one usually is a lot better than the others, so I keep doing that over and over again.
If I had to try the Jim Brandenburg experiment of just one photo a day -- I think I'd self destruct trying to second guess just what photo it should be. |

How do you define keeper/hit?
And it all depends on what I'm shooting - I'd say that 90% of my photos are technically good, but I only pick one out of a hundred as images I really like.
So, depending on who's making the call, I'd say it's something between 1% and 90%.
Happily though, and this is the real reason I posted, I've found that as I get more experienced, I am far better at discriminating what will be a good shot, and what won't. As such, I won't even stop for most photos that I would have taken a couple of years ago. |

Depends on how long I go away for, usually around 1000 to 1500 photo's, but I suspect I will take a lot more than, when we go to Europe in September, I'm expecting to take around 3000 photo's maybe more who knows, I might have to reduce the files to fit more on my XD cards, but not so much that I lose quality. My family are very use to me taking photo's whilst on holidays, although I will probably be testing there patience very soon!
Oh yeah to answer the 2nd part of the Q, i probably really love about 30% of the images I take!

I find this is a huge problem on vacations!!! I've gotten into the habit of not taking photos that I know won't be good -- so I'm gotten away from the slice of life stuff. Since it wasn't a "good" photo, I've found that I'm not taking just the simple documentary type of photos of the vacation. Not good. We miss having them. Pictures don't have to be stellar. Many times, you can't get that type of photo. Sometimes, they're just there to preserve a thought, not win a Pulitzer prize. It is really hard to force myself to take snapshots -- yet there's a definite purpose for snapshots. Especially when you have children, and they're growing up and away.
DPC has created difficulties... |

Only if you're shooting film, otherwise, if you take any pictures at all, I think the processing rate could only descrease assymptotically to zero ... |

I just did a wedding a couple weeks ago. I took just shy of 1000 photos that day.
I really like 5 of them.
I'm not really going to do that math, though, because there were many more shots that other people love. "Hit" being subjective...
The bride likes a shot I almost didn't even process for them... Go figure. |

I have a great deal of technical issues. It is very rare for a of shot mine to have good technicals and also have proper aesthetics.
Consequently, I have a low hit rate.
I will say that when I go back and look at a folder of shots, of a particular specific idea, usually the first one or two shots are the best, the safe shots before all the digital experimentation takes place. |

Completely agree!
But my word, 30%! That's just great you guys. I typically get around 10-15%. I took around 1700 pictures on my recent trip to Istanbul and I'd be lucky to get 170 really awesome photos.
Gotta get better! |
