Cory -- I sincerely appreciated your post -- I did find it helpful in trying to get my head around the enigma that is Cutout. However, I have to say I was also entertained by Don's post. I thought he made a good point about the incongruity of trying to emulate Cutout's style while focusing on maximizing your score.

I got that part of the joke right away. :)

Still would have been a better joke if he had really picked cutout images that he really did like.

Don, serious question - do you really only have love for the images that place low? I know that's not really true, but sometimes it would seem that way.

I tried to pick the images which I felt best showed the essence of his work, those pieces that I felt really somehow demonstrated, or at least hinted at, how he seems to approach this, which are thematic to his style and bring with them the full force of the imagination and creativity that Jan shows in his work.

Cory, your question was serious but rhetorical. There is no correlation between score and quality of an image, though I am intrigued by low scores because Art is the opposite of Taste.

I love discussing art and discussing why art and discussing why art is good. However, I do not want any expert guides for this challenge. I would rather everyone be thrust onto the Everest of Cutout without a sherpa. I want to see the results of that.

If, after the challenge, you want to discuss cutout's art I will gladly do so. Picking images and saying that these images represent his essence or his style, but not explaining why, is not helpful. It's only limiting. And cutout is one of the worst people to do that for because he has so many good images.

If you spent 10 minutes examining the images I "selected" and trying to understand their worth and relevance, those were 10 minutes well spent, imho.

So, to recap, I don't want the Reader's Digest version of cutout I want everyone's cut-out version of cutout, cut out from their own crazy collage of what they each discovered.

In the Spirit of Cutout might have been a better name/approach for this challenge. Following a laundry list of stylistic observations (low key, excessive grain, etc.) doesn't make you cutout any more than following the Commandments makes you Jesus. We've all seen his work. And if you have blood in your veins, it probably made you feel something. Follow that feeling. Inspiration not imitation.

To be fair, following the feeling, or doing anything really, won't make you cutout either. By definition these challenges invite us to emulate, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I think what you're saying is that we should not only emulate, but try to do so in a spirit and way that is consistent with cutout's values.

Of course, I'm not sure if I can really understand his values, or his motivation, since he really hasn't share that with us, and doesn't intend to. So again, I'm left with imitation or emulation, and I'm hoping more for the latter than the former - hence the reason I've bothered with posting my observations for others, in the hope that they will find it a quick-reference to what I found while I was engaged.

I don't really expect you or Don to be real authorities on the man, since you're not him. But I'd sure like to know what the heck you guys perceive about him when you look at his work.

As I'm reading all the posts...alas, the collection of cutout does not bring to me any hierophany located above the tallest mountain or within the highest Commandments of God. Rather, his collective work brings me back to the home of my childhood...the smell of turpentine, 3:00 a.m. snacks with Papa, and tall easels painted with the words "Less is More." His work brings me to a mysterious place that I am not naturally a part of, but still can't live without.

So, my apologies in advance to the venerable icon... cutout,

My entry is IN! ::squeak of fright::

Good Luck to everyone in this challenge!

I sat down with my camera a couple of days ago and started to
appreciate the surroundings I found myself in.
A fair number of exposures later, and after a good deal of enjoyment,
on to the computer the images went.
Images that, normally, would never see the light of day on DPC.
Still, two made my eyes light up.
One went in. The other beckoned.
Today, the 'other' replaced the first.
What ribbon am I aspiring to? The Blue or the Brown.
Only time will tell.
"I'm in."

Oh, no way I'd trade his advice for his unbiased comment. :)

So, I changed my entry.

cutout, please feel free to cut & paste the following as your comment:

"entirely silly and dismal"

Thank you. ;-D
