...Whew! I thought someone had stumbled on to my private collection.

Unquestionably creepy.

Ha! Saw the thread title and immediately wondered what the hell he'd been up to this week...

whoa... aside from the fact that we know art is a peeping art,

What a loaded story!!

What do you guys think? If I were the neighbor, I would be so incredibly pissed -- yet what wonderful art, and no one is recognizable to the outside world (unless the know the people and the area well.)

Creepy, yet quite cool.

Shouldn't the title read peeping art faux paintings?

If I was his neighbor I'd feel a devilish impulse to ham it up for his camera, do something unbelievable.
I'd also feel like aiming my camera back at him.

You know every time I want privacy the first thing I do is open all of the windows and stick my rear out. The onus is on my neighbors to keep their eyelids closed and they better.

yeah... but I still hope that my neighbors aren't watching my through their 600mm lenses. I've done some weird photo shoots in my dining room with the shades up (no!! no nudes!!)

I still live with the hope that my neighbors aren't sitting there with binoculars. It really is kind of creepy thinking that people may have their cameras trained at your windows taking photos. it does seem like you should be able to have that much privacy, whether or not you choose to close your shades. There is such a thing as common decency.

That being said -- I still think it's a pretty cool idea. If he painted these, would people be as upset?

What people do in the privacy of their own homes is no one else's business -- up to and including taking telephoto pictures of the neighbors. It's a self defeating argument, really. Close the blinds or move to the country.

Exactly!

The images are actually quite interesting. I don't know how I'd feel to learn that someone's been taking photos of me without my knowledge - and then selling them! - but again, the people are not identifiable, so...

Some of them really need to wash their windows.

Maybe the biggest offense here is the claim of art. The photographer seems to have gone out of his way to preserve the people's identity, hence maintain privacy. That's living in the center not the edge...

That would be a real chore. Most tall buildings like this hire professionals who won't kill themselves (most likely anyway) while washing the windows 70 stories up.

:)

I do rather enjoy the irony of the neighbors coming forward and saying "That unidentifiable person sticking their rear into the window is me, and now my privacy has been violated." Well thanks, it may not have been before you talked to the press, but now it sure is.

I' wholly support the rights of street photographers to take an image of anyone, in public.

Not so thrilled about the idea of through my window, into my home. I tend to expect some privacy there. The idea of 24 hour surveillance does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. If he can do it, why not the government?

In the old days, he would have been called a Peeping Tom.

i think its a bit creepy to look into a neighbors window and photographing their personal life. Home is for the self, the family and the guests. I m not sure what the laws are on this, but common courtesy where I come from covers this pretty well.

Accidentally seeing something strange through an open window is one thing - having a camera at the ready to shoot them is another entirely.

As much as i've tried to see it as an artist - and portray it as genuine slice of life...peeping tom photography doesn't excite me

More of those images can be found here at the gallery. Actually, those I saw
on that link were quite sensitive. Voyeurism? Oh, maybe, but truly they seemed to be art.

If you are creeping around in the bushes of your neighbors house to look into their windows, sure.

If you are sitting on the sofa in your living room, and those windows are what you see, not so much.

Using a telephoto lens sounds like a wee bit more than gazing out a window from your couch.

I don't see a problem with it, the way HE's doing it. I'd see a problem if the photos were more revealing or shocking in some way. Which I suppose is inconsistent...
