The last few challenges for me have been really fun. I am noticing that I am begining to categorize my photos into two different categories. Those who's opportunity is presented by chance and those that are by design.

My two highest rated photographs,

were both taken on chance encounters. I captured "Focus on Fire" when I was returning from our local wildlife refuge, spotting the fire in the distance and realizing that it might present a chance to capture a photo for the Fire challenge. "Transitions" I captured while sitting in a hotel room in San Francisco and discussing with friends what we might want to do our last few hours before returning home. I never gave any thought to entering it into Proportions until after returning home and seeing the photo on a crt.

My next two highest photos

were taken by design. "Election Year Cheer" is a meek imitation of Jacko's perfection with "Primary Glass". Although I was content with photograph I didn't consider it a sucess, because I never achieved the look I envisioned. "I yam what I yam" was perhaps the most fun of all, but also the most time consuming. I got the idea while driving home after a round of golf and commited to it realizing it would not be easy. The label for the can took about 90 minutes to design and print, add another 90 minutes for adjusting the lighting until I was content.

Enough rambling... how about the rest of you. Have most your entry's been by design or has the opportunity to capture your photograph been mostly by chance?

edit for spelling

Gold & Black - Placed 6th, Scored 6.302 - part accidental and part set-up. I set up the dogs in that formation, but I had no way of truly controlling what direction they were looking. The fact that the black one looked at me while the others looked at my helpers was completely random.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty... - Placed 24th, Scored 5.804 - I had seen my puppy do this the day before, so I had her go out and do it again. Her nose between the bars, however was her doing, not mine.

Rose in Bloom - Placed 70th, Scored 5.761 - Set-up. I took this picture simply for memory's sake (it was the rose my boyfriend gave me for our first anniversary) and discovered DPC a couple days later.

Beams and Shadows - Placed 60th, Scored 5.721 - Set-up, well about as much as you can managed by pointing the camera up at the patio cover on your back porch.

My truly set-up photos seem to do the worst. I haven't got the equipment to set-up lighting or backdrops, so I have to scrouge for what I can get through nature.
