Inspired by Pixelpig work, I knocked myself out one afternoon ...

revisiting some of my old 'flip n blend' compositions,
I decided to try to get rid of the black backgrounds that seemed to predominate those early efforts.
this was a fun first try...

The new one looks more like it was made by a traditional printmaking or silkscreen process, but in this case I think I still prefer the more defined look of the older version.

So, that did you do differently to make it generate the gradients instead of the solid BG?

THAT's the $64 question, Paul. It's definitely a one of a kind process.
Start by selecting out the black and keeping the selection, then lay on top of the black several colors. I started here with blue & orange. Then using other colors and/or various patterns in the gradient area, add additional gradients, blending them into the mix with your choice of blending modes. Stop when satisfied, or backtrack when "mud" arrives.

I see ... in my previous F/B work I have not tried anything involving making selections or adding gradients -- everything has been strictly variation in blend modes and global Curves adjustments.

Here's a new version of an old image - changing the blending modes on the original flip n blend creates endless variations:

We've been getting some fun stuff in this thread recently.

Here's one from me - I can't show the original for a few weeks, but I had to show this creation that just jumped out of my computer this morning.

I used my spiral action on a circled selection and then used hard mix & (um) something else for blending modes on the whole image. This technique goes so fast it's hard to remember just what worked and what didn't.

Anyhow, I'm calling this "World in my Hand"

Off to a nice start, but be careful -- this is clearly an addictive pastime ... :-)

FWIW I no longer "squeeze" the images into a square -- that can always be done with the final composite. For the 90° rotation step I use Photoshop's Numeric Transform dialog, but add scaling the width to 75% and the height to 133.33%, which makes it the same size as the base image.

I like being able to make an interesting abstract out of any old blurry or poorly-composed/exposed shot, but I also sometimes shoot deliberately with this processing in mind ... spare compositions with clearly-defined shapes and few gradients or details seem to work best, unless you want to end up with riotous color patterns reminscent of Indian Madras fabrics (I have a lot of those too!).

After a while, I started adding Transform>Warp to my flip'n'blend routine. Like potato chips, every one is different.

Pull up a chair, record some Actions, and start catching up!
Yeah, addictive, these never-ending patterns & pictures.

I think I've tried using these as source "tiles" for mosaic software too ...
