I personally love where expert editing is going or has been because it allows for a very creative challenge. Gyaban's,Samantha, and others work is envied by many including myself and with their participation in these challenges it creates a benchmark to ensure we put forth our best effort. Yes it sucks that they are so tremendously talented with the ability to show us their imagination but they weren't always that good. So the more times we explore these challenges ourselves and put forth more effort than the last, hopefully we can get a percentage better and closer to their caliber. One can hope right :) I mean thats what this site is about anyways correct, to become better with our artistic and photographic abilities otherwise we become mundane tourists with a point and shoot camera developing our pictures at a kiosk excited it was in focus when we pushed the shutter! |
Yes. The work of inspired people adds a lot of energy to every competition they are a part of. I'm glad they are members here. We are lucky to have so many, for they are the exception to the rule.

Remember, this is not the same as expert editing. This is not about "punishing" the photographer for not "finding" a better image. Its all about using photoshop anyway you want to enhance the photo, but actually maintaining photographic integrity, and removing the graphic design and fantasy elements.
I would live to somehow instill a feeling of subtlety rather than a "wow factor" "challenge ramp up. |

Here is my thing.
If I do this in my personal endeavours its generally out of need. I can get my models and choose a location and shoot. I can do my best to choose a time a spot, If something doesn't work I'm still expected to deliver stellar results. I'm not constrained by rules, its end product that trumps.
Here its a challenge. If we ask for an additional rule set, we are only hurting ourselves. One of the great things about dpc is the photographic integrity. If I want to create a stellar shot, I have to work to get it. To give the gyaban example, he doesn't just excel at expert, the guy hasn't paced less than 5th in over a year in any rule set, why? He goes through extremes effort to get the shots he needs or setup his vision. Look at the landscapes Mnet takes, she drives for hours to get to those paces. Why should we devalue the worth of that effort?
As much as I rail against the minimal editing and love processing, I'm against making our lives easier on dpc, I want and need
to be challenged to go to the efforts required to get a shot.

Perhaps I am saying this should replace advanced, not be a new category.
I do see what you are saying, but processing that you don't know is processing, is nothing to fear. TO use an often unwise and ill fitting example, a musical analogy, the fantastic guitar solo in Eric Clapton's Layla was done on a tiny fender champ amp. Do you feel cheated? little amps big sound
Its all smoke and mirrors. As long as photographic integrity is maintained, whats the difference? |

Believe me, I wholeheartedly believe in what you are saying. However in the spirit of this site, a challenge site, a site where the point isn't to create the best possible image, but one where you create the best image under a set of constraints.
I think advanced is just fine where it is and I think we can agree that expert, in the spirit of photography is what you want, but the content currently submitted isn't photographic. I think the blame lies with us the voters, by allowing images that lose there photographic feel and enter into the realm of digital art. The rules clearly state this, but how do you enforce it?
