Bad, bad Kylie. Not supposed to see someone's entry during a challenge up for voting. You deserve a spanking Just kidding.

It's common courtesy to everyone on the site not to ask to see shots up for voting. It is also frowned upon to discuss an entry directly, such as by naming it's title.

Later.

Being new to this site, I am curious what, in general, is considered to be a good score. I have not found anything on the site that gives guideline as to how the scale should be used to score pictures, so it seems purely subjective. My first entry finished at about 5.4 and on Rust I am currently at about 6.3 and rising (at least for now).

I am just curious what most people here consider to be a good score vs. an average score, etc.

For me, anything over a 5.5 is acceptable. Submissions below that will start to get too close to that 50 percentile that I try to stay above. If you're photo is over a 6, you're in good shape. Over a 6.5 will usually put you in the top 20 ... and a 7 puts you damn close to a ribbon.

I won a ribbon at 6.7 it depends of the challenge, in some challenges lower score ribbons than in others. Look in the challenge history. Many challenges have highest score below 7.

PS in most challenges 6.2 is a top 10

It's very tough to comment and vote when there are 400+ images in the hopper. Not including Abstract. If you include abstract then there are approx 600 images needing votes and comments. There is simply not enough time to look at each image in any detail and comment. If you are able to vote on all 400 images and leave quality comments, more power to you. :) Right now I'm just trying to vote and leave quality comments on images that speak to me the most- good or bad.

(edited after realizing there were over 600 images this week!)

I'm still new to the site as well. A couple of weeks ago I started a thread asking about voting and as I see usually happens, got a lot of great feedback and perspective on voting. It was very helpful to me. Different people have different systems, but some things it seems everyone kind of favors. For one thing, comments are very important to pretty much everyone. To some, comments are more imp. than scores. I start every shot I vote on right in the middle ground (5-6), then as I look at it, I look for technical aspects, does it fit challenge, is it thought provoking, creative, overall how it "grabs" me, etc., etc. and score goes up/down from there. And my personal policy is - 1,2or3,8,9,or10...get's a comment absolutely good or bad. Middle ground can be frustrating but the biggest gripe seems to be "fringe" votes with no explanation/reasoning. I agree. There are some great people here who give great feedback. I have learned a lot in a very short time. Perhaps something for SC to consider (sorry :-(, I know you all have a great load already, thanks) is setting up voting where "fringe"votes (like 1,2,9,10) can not be accepted without comments.

Don't be discouraged. There have been a lot of entries which will usually mean slightly lower overall scores for most. I'm sitting at a 5.6. The winner may not have much more then a 6 in this one.

(clearing a place in my profile for my ribbon) ... I have a 6.54 so far.

I'll join the 4.7 club, I too thought that I submitted a great shot. Oh well! It's cool!

I know I am nit-picking, but on a scale from 1-10 the average is 5.5; 5.0 is the average of a scale from 0-10. So any submission below 5.5 is actually below average.

Of course this does not really matter. The average for the challenge is not posted until the results are; that is what I try to stay above. Have not done so nearly enough. :(

BTW: for those watching scores, I dropped to 4.something earlier, but have since climbed back up to 165/5.1212/6. It will most likely stay somewhere around there.

I'm not certain which would be the harder to get. :D

I was looking in the Challenge history, and in the Textures II challenge (the only other challenge with 400+ entries), the winning photo still garnered a 7.2. I was kind of shocked by that, given the number of entries. Although I do hope this one has a lower winning score...it will make my 5.6 place a little better! ;.)
