I apologize if I'm wrong, but I don't think you get it.

My "where you live" and my snail had the SAME wrong dates. Not that I can show you another 50 with the "where you live" wrong date. The receipt photos were turned in like 2 hours or something after.

The entire point of this is that outside proof doesn't matter, even if it's clear. I get that. Now. I'm still done with this ridiculous site.

And you risk being caught. We've nailed people for attempting to edit EXIF data in the past. (Even though they thought they were being clever.) And in such a case, you are obviously cheating, and that is grounds for suspension from the site. DPC doesn't take cheating lightly.

It isn't like we are competing for cash and prizes here. This is supposed to be fun, and educational. I'm sure some people could live with the guilty conscience knowing that they only won because they cheated, but it certainly wouldn't be the great feeling you'd have if you won a ribbon by merit instead of falsified data.

Eddy - not her point. If I wanted to, I could have changed the date. Simply. BEFORE sending proof. And trust me, if I did it, I would be more than "clever"

No one said you cheated, or did anything wrong on purpose. It seems that the majority here appreciates the fact that we have rules and they are inforced. You were DQed on a technicality, not because you purposely did something wrong. Sure, because you won, we could have just ignored it and said "suuuure...because it's you Mav, we'll let it slide". But how much faith would the members of the site have for us if we did that?? Zero Zilch Nada. We do what we have to do. I would hope you included would feel the same.

why are people being unreasonable like this, everytime there is something wrong they wanna quit the whole site...
there are about 50.000 active members of this site i think... i dont think anybody leaving will make a difference..
just take it like a man... dont start acting like kids please..i mean i had plenty arguements with people here too .. rather more provocative ones.. about photographic integrity.. i didnt run around screaming to leave the site..
first of all if anything you should be mad at yourself.. that is what i would do after i was done being mad at SC...

There are clear signs and patterns to the dates in EXIF, and when they are minipulated it's easy to tell. Most likely you will be caught if you try it.

Mavrik,

I do get it. Your EXIF was outside of the dates. You submitted other shots also outside of the dates that shows it was really within the correct dates. Your picture was within the dates. I don't question that (but not because of the proof you submitted, it could be easily manipulated as well). You're EXIF was wrong. That is why a majority of the SC voted to DQ your picture.

I have this "friend," and after reading a bit of this thread (and thankfully before insinuating that anyone was/is a bonehead for not having the proper date set), my "friend" checked the EXIF data of pics he took tonight and discovered that all those pics list "NONE" in the date and time field, including a pic my "friend" entered for the "rusted" challenge. How does my "friend" proceed? Can someone from site council just remove the entry? Does my friend need to do anything else?

My friend doubts his picture will win a ribbon, but it doesn't seem fair to only DQ the good ones.

Does the date/time get reset if the batteries are out of the camera for a certain amount of time? My friend is confused as to how this happened.

Not that I really matter all that much, but I agree with what you guys are doing. The rules are the rules.

There were some major discussions a couple weeks ago on this (I foget what that photo was), and I saw both sides. I see both sides now, and while there is "proof" I think you guys do need to follow the rules. I think this does need to be a black and white issue.

I think to the photographer, it sucks, but it's live and leard. Check the camera.

And if you're going to leave over something like this, then leave. It's lame. It's was an accident. You'll get over it.

And it does suck that for like a couple minutes it was on the main page, but that was an accident too.

Anyway, yeah. That's how I feel about it.

I agree... Mavrik, just blow it off as a mistake and don't let this ruin your day (or week). It doesn't mean that much does it? In the scope of everything else, it's not that big a deal.

I'm afraid it went just the opposite. I'm afraid people who KNOW me voted against me because of who I am and their desire not to look like because I know some of SC, I get preferential treatment. Eddy doesn't know me. Eddy voted to keep my pic. Drew doesn't know me. Drew voted to keep my pic. Karma, Karen, MK and CJ all know me - and all voted to DQ as far as I can tell. So you tell me.

theodor - then stop reading it. I haven't got much to say to you. You say be mad at myself when I'm done being mad at SC - fine. When I'm DONE being mad at SC, I will be mad at myself. Happy? Now go away.

First of all, your name is no where on our voting page to see who's photo it is. Second, I don't know you, and I voted DQ. This is no conspiracy against you. I'm sorry you feel that way.
05/05/2004 01:30:40 AM · #68
I voted DQ yes. And this is why: I was originally for leniency with the dates. After all, this site is just for fun and what's the harm, right? And then two things happened. One, I realized that if the photographer can't be bothered to spend two seconds checking their date, especially after we announced a million times that it was VERY IMPORTANT, that I didn't really feel like the SC should have to spend a bunch of time reviewing proof and checking the date the camera was first manufactured and blah blah blah.

The second was exactly what Mav pointed out...that there were going to be some people I knew having this issue and that it would be difficult to make an arbitrary decision when it involved a personal appeal. I didn't want to make a judgement based on how well I knew the person, how good of an essay they wrote begging not to be DQed or how much I liked their photo. So I decided that I would vote DQ on photos that had invalid dates, regardless of how "convincing" the proof was. Everyone was warned so it's not like it's a surprise. I am perfectly happy this way because when issues like this come up, I know for certain that my vote had nothing to do with Mavrik.

Possibly not - but I posted about the 6/24/04 thing on the forums so anyone who saw all my proof would know it was me. I appreciate your many responses to this issue as well. I do believe it was settled wrongly *and* in poor timing (which has been apologized for and I do appreciate it).

oh dude.. you are really something else...
at first i was really trying to emphatise with you.. but you kept making accusations.. first it was the proof now it is that SC is a bunch of crooks trying to bring you down.. now you are attacking me.. it is you who brought it onto yourself.. you made a mistake.. you set your camera clock wrong... deal with it man...
and i aint gonna take any orders from you or anyone else.. i can post whateverever i want.. stop being a little kid and take it as it comes..
i understand your frustration and i told you i would have felt the same way..but i think it is about time you calm down and see things objectively rather than creating imaginary evils around you...

Not true. I voted no DQ. My first post in this thread reflection the position of Site Council, not my personal vote.

For what it's worth, I love the image, and it deserved the ribbon. You could always look at the bright side. At least now you KNOW it was ribbon worthy. If we had done this the way we had planned, you'ld never know if you got 1st, 2nd 3rd or 16th. *attempt to lighten thigs up a bit* We may have stollen your ribbon...but at least you got it.

theodor give him a break just put yourself in his position. I doubt you wont be angry. At anger people sometimes say stupid things too, imagine evils and stuff, that's natural, but I don't see no point for you to extra judge him at this moment by pointing out all the things he sais in anger. Tell these to hime tomorow after he gets a good sleep on it :)

Theodor - you said be mad at me when I'm done being mad at them. I will. Ok? Ok.

I understand now voting is anon on these. I got that. Anything else?
