I searched the forums and found a couple of people who use this camera. I wonder if that means it's not very good or if no one knows about it. I can't afford to spend $1000 on a camera for my little hobby, but I looked at several in our local Wally World and found that the 6490 has a lot of features for the price (397.00). I could swing that. Anyone have any thoughts about the camera? Does it suck? Is it great? I read all I could find on the internet and have seen more good than bad. Info, please, if you can...

I did tons of research and even testing after getting mine, and my choice for my first good digitalcamera was Kodak's 6440. It is very similiar to the one you're considering. I am just starting to learn, and just throwing myself into this passion, so I could only justify a middle range also. I am not capable yet of really utilizing a fancier one, except some add-on lenses maybe. I also thought I should have something super portable so that I could just get a lot of practice developing my "eye" and siezing opportunities to learn. That has been important; with digital, I take so many photos I never would have and I always have a camera with me now. Anyway, I LOVE MY 6440. Kodak is getting better and better reviews these days -- they're making some excellent products. The 6440 has a 4X optical zoom and can accept add-on lenses. I can't remember off the top of my head why I chose it instead of the 6490, but it may have been partly due to that. That's my 3-cents worth! Let us know how it works out.

Thanks for your input. The Kodak website said that this month they will be releasing a wide angle lens and two different filter sets for the 6490, to use with the lens adapter made available last month. Their site is out of stock, and Wal-Mart doesn't have them in yet. I hope that if I go with this camera, the accessories won't be too difficult to find.

A friend of mine has one and seems pretty satisfied with it -- took hundreds of photos in Australia right after he got it.

For a camera in its price range, it has a lot of good features, including many manual controls, ability to add lenses/filters, and the long zoom. Main disadvantage seems to be the lack of image-stabilization makes the long zoom less effective, and possibly that the recharging is tied to the dock (which does make downloading simple).

Costco carried these for a while, but I don't know if they still do.

Have you tried Amazon (forpurchasing)? And their are a couple of awesome review sites on the web; I'llpost the URL's later if you want from my home PC. For battery recharging, you still have the option of regular rechargeables. When I travel, I just take my rapid charger with a couple sets of batteries. At home, I use the dock. I get excellent battery life with it; my Nikon, not half as good! Hope we have helped you some here!

I have had my dx6490 for 3 weeks (1225 photos) and love it
I find it very easy to use but still using it mostly point and shoot, will start using manual settings more
these 2 shots are straight out of the camera auto everything just cropped and resized
the bat was full zoom hand held on a windy day with branches moveing around a fair bit

the batteries last a looooong time so charging is not a problem but a spare battery might be a good idea
my camera came with a case and spare battery and a wall charger (no dock, you don't needed it)
for the price I recomended it highly

Don't know much about the Kodak cameras, but the Fuji S7000 has a $100 rebate and online you can get teh whole thing for about $400-450.

check eBay for cameras - you can get some really good deals there.

I appreciate the helpful info from all of you. One thing I do like about Wal-Mart is the return policy...that way if I don't like it or if it doesn't work, it isn't a pain in the rump to return. Also...they have layaway which makes it easier for people like me (average joes) to buy things like this. Thanks for the help!

The first thing to attract me to this camera was the 10 x Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon optical zoom. It's quality. I never use the digital 3 x zoom, I've turned it off, so I don't know if there has been any great advances in that department. I wonder....
Another thing I really love is the orientation sensor. No longer must I turn my head sideways to view pics I uploaded to my pc. A great little feature that I was unaware of when I bought it.
There is a little lag time between shots, and that bothers me. But....I could use the burst feature which will shoot a succession of 6 (I think)
The camera dock transfers pictures very fast to my pc.
I've not seen much digital noise in the pictures. My Kodak DC4800's pictures got lots of comments about that, but not this one.
The DX6490 feels very comfortable in my hands, which are an average woman's size. The controls are intuitive, and the menu easy to navigate.
The rechargable battery never seems to run low.
The LCD is nice and large.
After a short time the camera goes into sort of a hibernation, if not used. This conserves energy, but the nice thing is once you hit the zoom or other control, it springs to life pronto.
There is an option to use the LCD or viewfinder. With most viewfinders you'll find that what you see isn't what you get. Kodak has overcome this allowing you to see, through the viewfinder, precisely what you'll get. Kudos!!! If you choose to view through the LCD screen, you're in for a treat. It even works in bright scenes! Another nice surprise.
The Easy Share software is ok. What I don't like is that I can't drag a file from the ez share browser into my editing programs. It's an inconvenience.

Overall, Kodak has put a lot of effort into this and it shows. I did some research before I bought this, comparing features with other makes and models. I am so glad I chose this camera.

I think I will wind up going with it for now. Of course, the MegaMillions lottery is up to like 55 million, so maybe...

I have several friends from work who own this camera. 5 to be exact. They are all very happy with this camera but here are some of the complaints I have heard from them:
- It's difficult to use indoors without the flash and get a decent shutter speed that allows hand holding. I have played around with it a bit at work and I also found that it is a camera hard to take indoor shots with and get clear shots.
- There is no manual focus. At least we have never been able to find one. Not even in the manual.

The guy at Wal-Mart said it could be done, but reading your post makes me wonder (you never know about the Wal-Mart photo people...have you seen that Robin Williams movie????). That's a point I will have to check out and consider strongly. Thanks for the info!

My wife uses the DX6490 and is quite impressed with it. The manual setting are adequate but not having a manual focus can be really annoying at times. The ezy-share software is pretty good and the batteries power goes on and on and on... An 8/10 overall score as is but with the now available add-on lenses abd filters = 9/10 for the money out-lay.

I have a 2 X telephoto lens that I used with my dc4800. It also fits the dx6490.

iam very new to kodak's DX6490 i only had it for about 3 month now. but what i'm beginning to notice is that in the dark it's really heard to get a picture that's bright enough with the flash which is attached to the camera when nused on the normal camera mode. also when night mode is used you some what sacrifice the steadyness of a sport mode over a little more britness in the picture. any way other than that i'm very happy about the overal performance of this camera. hope i could have said more but for not being too much of a technical person myself i don't know what more i can say. n e way hope what little i said above helps.

P.S. i don't have a lot of $$ to spend so does any1 know what kind of external flash would work great with Kodak DX6490?? i would appreciate any feedback. thanks

From what I've seen it doesn't look like your camera can take an external flash (no hot shoe). Below is the link to the manufacturer's site. You may find something there.

cpanaioti: thanks for the reply. yeah i know it doesn't have a flash mounting area on the middle point of the camera. However, there is a adaptor plug hole is on the left of the camera that can have a external flash. I've never seen a camera be4 with this kind of external flash plug i've always seen the ones with a mounting post clearely visible on the camera. but any way i'll search for more info online or something. but once again thanks for the reply.

The DX6490 is quite good value for money for those after a decent output with a good quality lens. They main drawback I feel is the relatively slow auto focus system. Compared to Olympus C770 or C760 it is a bit behind the 8 ball. I can see this being a problem if you're photographing kids or sports. A manual focus mode would of definately helped here. But overall, it's great value for money. It's a shame though that Kodak still don't want to produce hard copy version sof their manuals with their cameras. They promote the EasyShare system with a printer dock as a stand-alone system, that is "no PC required", but you need a PC to read the manual?? Go figure!
