"Rusted" looks like being the most popular challenge since "Orange", judging from the current number of submissions.

I just replied to a thread about how many challenges I enter. I don't enter much. But I did this one. |

Perhaps the reason for it`s popularity is the relative ease of finding subject matter and the fact that there should be very few instances of "not meeting the challenge"....(hopefully)
On the downside, we may be wading through a lot of "repeat images" when voting..but the scope is there for some really good work and I`m looking forward to it. |

What? Do you have any idea how much stuff is galvanised nowadays? It's so frustrating! cars don't waste away, fences and street furniture are painted in all-weather finishes or worse powder coated in plastic... I agree, it's rust is pretty well-defined - it is or it ain't. But seriously, in a week of searching i found 4 things rusty, and only half of those were approximating something remoltely photogenic. I thought it would be a breeze, this one. Bloody tricky, it turned out. Hunting for rusty stuff is like finding a rusty non-galvanised needle in a haystack. Should have gone to the seaside, but the weather this weekend was horrendous... |

I just spent most of the afternoon driving around two specific neighborhoods in my town looking for the "picture in my head." I know what I wanted, and figured it would be there. Nope. I even got out and walked around for an hour or so and all I got was strange looks.
Now if any of those places get robbed in the next week or so, I'm sure they'll remember the lady with the camera looking intently at all the homes and property!
The only time I came close to finding what I was searching for...I also found a not so friendy pooch keeping an eye on me. The perils of DPC! |

Wouldn't be surprise if there was 400 entries.

This could be hazardous to our health!! There are some great urban shots to be had in my town, but I don't know if I and the camera would ever make it back home! |

Holy smokes, I didn't realize the quantity of Rusted shots. There have been a lot of submissions to Open entries recently.

We're going to all get really low marks toward the end when everyone is totally exhausted from going through them all!!! I didn't think this one would attract so many people. |

I went back too. Recomposed because I had a little soft focus issue. Still like the original but sure I would have gotten killed for being OOF. Probably still won't get great marks but I like it, so screw it anyway. LOL

I sat till after 1.00am (SA time) trying to come up with something for this, but couldn't get the lighting right to produce a decent shot - the perils of procrastination. Now that I've seen how many entries there are I'm not even sorry I'm not entering.

Y'know, I bet the traffic is way up on this site because it was named in that PC Magazine "100 Sites You Didn't Know You Couldn't Live Without" article.
I was fortunate enough to find the rust entry I was looking for in my own backyard. Well, sort of, actually it was in the yard but I brought it in the dining room to light and shoot it; my kids thought I had finally lost my marbles or something...but what fun!

I found lots of rust in a 2-block radius but then I live in one of the oldest neighborhoods in one of the oldest cities in the US (East Side of Providence) so there is plenty of old stuff to be found rusting away, just in fire hydrants alone. I was driving to the library today and there is some construction going on right off the highway. There was a huge pile of giant rusty discs and cylinders--Lord knows what from. It was by no means a safe spot to pull over and take pictures but I noticed it because of the challenge.
My submission for Rusted is kind of unconventional (in a most conventional way). It may get points off for not truly meeting the challenge but, dang it, I'm really partial to the shot. I'm being stubborn because I have some others that are more likely. We'll see. |

Had to pass on this challenge, way too busy lately... had no time to go around and look for something that would fit this challenge. Anyway, 372 entries.. voting will be really tough.

It's ironic . . . I happened to find this site surfing one day on my latest obssession (photography, of course) and instantly saw something special about it. Then I saw the reference to The List. When I looked at the list on the magazine's website, I don't know if that would have nudged me here or not. Just glad I found it! |

I can't stop seeing rusty things now. I have to keep telling myself "no, that challenge is over, you don't need to take a photo of that" ... |

I believe it's the same for the new DSLR's (affordable or not)that have brought more and more talent to the site.

That doesn't account for more entries, does it?

You are all invited to rural Colorado..... Lots and lots and LOTS of rust out here -- it's all around. (And I just got "Orange" almost out of my head) |
