I have two versions of the same image. I was told that the first is too dark even though on my monitor i can see all the details of the bucket and rope, etc.. Any comments?

first:

second (lightened):
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=74306

Maybe its me, but I am partial to the first because of the contrast between the sparks and the welders sheild against the almost nothingness of his surroundings.

Also, is this the best way to get comments on photos not entered into challenges? I am really after some feedback on my images as I am just starting out with my 10D and getting back into photo after not having really shot anything since my photography class back in college. I want to make sure I am using the proper mechanism for feedback, if there is another way, please let me know.

Thanks!!!

PS.. I love the site, there are so many gifted artists here, it is a bit scary to enter submissions. Thank you all for your help!!!

I, too, like the first version better.

Good shot.

Now I am really afraid to enter challenges when someone like you is!!! This is a great shot!!! I prefer the first one for the deeper contrasts also. I think this is the right way to get feedback, but I am so new, someone else could probably tell you better on that one.

I prefer the second image. The striking contrast is still there but is made stronger by the detail in the rope and the white thing the welder is sitting on. It's a great shot no matter how you slice it.

On my monitor (gamma 2.2) the second image looks better.

I guess that I have a huge inclination to liking a darkness within images and a high contract of the focal point. I can see how the second is technically superior (exposure, detail, etc.), but for me, the impact is in the first. Now I know why I can't sort and choose through my own photos!!!!! Both of these are so good, I'd never be able to part with either. I'm hopeless . . .

i like the first one better.. you dont always need perfect clarity or exposure to have good picture in your hands.. it is alright to brake the rules.. and i think the first picture you got is very interesting and emotional almost..

I think I like the first one better. Perhaps to address the "too dark" comments you can try cropping the frame tighter around the action at the center This will get rid of a lot of the excess darkness all around the edges and may make the total image seem lighter, but still maintain the contrasts to the darker areas.
