Love is too advanced a concept for a 4 year old, so you have to dissemble and tell him something he's not going to understand?
That's actually pretty sad. I feel bad for the kid. |

This weekend I put a shirt on my daughter (1 year old) my brother had bought a while back.
On it said "They're raising me gay."
Walking down the street, this 40'ish heterosexual couple says, loud enough so I can hear, that CSA (children services agency) should be called.
"Excuse me?"
"That's a form of abuse."
"Go f*ck yourself."
"Why don't you make me."
No hesitation, he didn't even see it coming.
I don't understand the audacity some people have in saying the crap they do to complete strangers. I'm hoping my actions make that person think twice before he opens his pie hole again about subjects where he never should have been a participant. |

How do you teach a 1 year old to be gay? |

How do you teach a 1 year old to be gay? | You don't. My personal belief is that it's not a choice like choosing white or whole wheat. It just is, and that's what makes the shirt funny.
edit - Let's say I'm wrong and it is a 100% personal choice, I still don't care. This is a complete non-issue in my opinion.
Today marks the tenth anniversary since gay marriages have been recognized in Ontario.

So if you don't teach a 1 year old to be gay, don't you think it might be offensive to some people? |

Ironically enough the only people offended are heterosexuals against gay marriage. I've yet to meet a homosexual who finds offense.
My gay friends think it's one of the best they've seen.
edit - If someone does find it offensive, maybe the best course of action is to keep their opinions to themselves.

...perhaps, but only to narrow minded, bigoted and uninformed people who are ignorant of the realities of the gay lifestyle.

In order to be offended, someone would have to take it seriously. The only people likely to take it seriously are the people who think it's actually possible to somehow teach a baby to be straight or gay. I suspect Venser isn't much concerned about whether or not he offends those people.
Personally, I think the shirt is hilarious.

You can buy a slightly different variation then the one I bought from Amazon. |

I love it. This reminds me of when I saw a baby in Haiti wearing a donated onsie that said "Does this diaper make my butt look big?"
He wasn't wearing a diaper, as the rest of the babies in the town, and I was sitting there wondering whether that was amusing or not and decided it was kind of sad and ironic in that context...
You can't raise a baby to be gay. You can raise a baby to be insecure about their looks. ;) |

Ironic. You make a huge statement that you are "Teaching" your 1 year old to be gay, yet you want others to keep their opinions to themselves?
I don't think it works that way. |

It's not a huge statement, it's a joke. You don't have to yell at someone on the street just because you find their joke to be in poor taste. |

No more than "teaching" a 1 year old to be green eyed or left handed is a huge statement. It only offends the ignorant loons who think it's serious. The joke is on them, and the punchline is that they don't get it. |

Of course, if by "gay" you mean "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy", then you really shouldn't have to teach your children that. You just have to not squelch it.
Saying, "Go **** yourself" is squelching "carefree", "happy", nor "bright and showy" in others though.
You must understand that the term "gay" in our day and age means much more than "carefree", "happy", nor "bright and showy." |

Wait, wait. You're leaving out the part where the other people made a rude comment first, about a t-shirt that was a joke. Happy and carefree had already left the building before Venser said a word. |

I have other funny shirts like the above which promotes the LGBT community which I don upon my daughter. My gay friends always purchase items like this because they know I'll put it on her to wear and I don't care what others think (unless they cross a boundary).

So let me get this straight.
Venser puts a shirt on his daughter designed to elicit a response (hopefully a humorous one, but the shirt is only humorous because it is edgy.)
Lo and behond, he gets a response.
The comeback is to tell them to go f%ck themselves.
I'm scratching my head at that one. I'm guessing you haven't ever won an award for Mr. Congeniality or Mr. Diplomacy. Personally, I try to avoid people like this because they tend to just make life dramatically difficult and then blame everybody else for this state of affairs. |

Pretty far stretch on their part, and the response was only extending their ridiculous logic.
edit - Yes, the shirt is meant to elicit a response, hopefully one of humor along with the question, "where can I pick one up?" Not as some half-ass underhand remark about abusive parenting when they don't have the first clue how I treat or raise my daughter.

But you had that part written on the t-shirt for them, didn't you? - They obviously took it literally. |
