i don't care about the recognizable shots as much as the totally random/no composition at all shots. just because its abstract doesn't mean it has to loose all sence of what makes a good photo. |

Don't be sure they're all mistakes. When I'm shooting photos, I keep both challenges in mind ... it's certainly possible for a photo to "fit" more than one challenge ... and surely this isn't the first time you've seen a rusty object entered in a challenge. |

I can make out most of them especially the mac flower shots. I'm really starting wish that the mac flower shot be banned for at least one challenge. |
I am only taking a point off for recognizable objects, I don't think it's fair to give 1's for things like that, 1's are for pictures that are so bad that they make my eye's bleed sort of thing. |
Will in that case, my shots are apparently forcing people, in drooves, to the hospitals for emergency blood transfusions! |
Your shots are no where near that catergory Roost. Don't shortchange your talent, you have a ton of work to be proud of! ;D

You're too kind Matt but my streak of 4's has yet to be broken! & I am certainly not count the dismal 5 I got for the one that just ended. Apparently my shot, which I love, didnt even deserve a 5! What's up with that? Haters! :)

How about this for scoring - do you actually like the shot or not? That's the question I asked myself. Lots of stuff was "abstract" but some just didn't do anything for me while others leaped off the screen with that "wow" factor. |

I am currently having a 4 streak as well. I really like my shots as well. Sometimes people agree, sometimes they don't. I just look at it oh well, that's the way the dice was rolled. Sometimes you need the slumps to make the highs look good. It follows a high low sort of trend.

I got a comment that says something like It's just a ____ and a ____? So that means that you cannot tell for sure right? Which would make it kind of abstract? Anyway, yeah.

I think in general, more than the usual number actually meet the challenge (to me).
"Abstracts are about lines, shapes and colors. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract. "
The emphasis on the challenge is the first sentence: Is the picture you are looking at more about lines, shapes and colors than it is about any recognizable subject? In other words, you should see the lines, shapes, and colors, foremost. If you can recognize an object, it should be only secondary that you see it as such.
When I submitted this challenge description when they were collecting the big list of challenges, it was my intent to focus the challenge on shots that are "clearly abstract". There are so many shots on these types of sites where someone calls it an abstract, but it is first and foremost a picture of something you recognize.
But again, to me, clearly abstract is about seeing lines, shapes and colors as the primary subject of the photo.
I hope that helps some of you... |

I'm not giving out any ones...that's just too mean-spirited for me. But I am going to vote down objects that are clearly or readily recognizeable, since the instructions say "If it is recognized as an object - it is not an abstract."

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for.

I have found 2 out of the 211 entries that I love. I think it becomes difficult maybe even scary for some people to shoot abstracts-especially if you are a perfectionist or enjoy shooting from the left side of your brain.

what about those shots that say what the pic is of? now you know, and probably recognize it.
just to let you know. i have nothing at stake in this challenge; i didn't submit anything. |

I find it kind of odd that a lot of the pics tell you exactly what they are...but only a few were ones that I didn't know until I looked at the title, which gave it away. This is going to be a long week! My title doesn't give it away, but my score keeps dropping nonetheless. I think I'll just go to bed.

one of the things i find really funny about the abstract challenge is, the strict voting along challenge details on such an imprecise and liberal subject.

I have to agree to it was a shame that defination was given to abstract here. An abstract can be abstract due to color or unusual circumstances within a photo.
