So I've been thinking of creating my own press pass to wear and carry around for when I need want to get special access to events and other areas otherwise blocked off.
I don't meet the requirements to obtain an official one from the city of NY but was wondering if anyone here has any insight into this.
I've found the following "somewhat shady" websites that offer press passes but I still feel like creating my own would be cheaper.
US Press Corps
United States Press Agency
International Association For Press Photographer
Thanks

As a working member of the press I have to say that your idea to me seems "somewhat shadier" than any website you could link on here.
1. Press passes are given to people who are REQUIRED to have the access that they allow.
2. You have to have a reason to be there. Other than I have a cool camera and want to take photos.
3. Doing what you are considering doing tells me a lot about you.
4. I hope you realize that should you get caught, impersonating someone(even a member of the press) is against the law and in turn has consequences I hope you are willing to deal with.
5. I have seen people removed with great force and banned permanently from places where they thought it would be "Cool" to go into impersonating a member of the press.
You do realize that even considering doing what you say, makes it even harder on people who actually put food on the table with their press credentials. I suggest if you want to have press credentials, find someone willing to hire you and get them for you when they are needed.
I have one issued to me by the Missouri Press Association every year. My EMPLOYER puts in the required documentation for me to have them. |

There's a guy who shows up most years at the WWII reenactment in Waxahachie with an enormous home made "press pass" thinking it will grant him special privileges. He is trying to sell the photos afterwards. All it gets him is a bad reputation among the reenactors and our local photography group, which has been invited to participate in the event as "war correspondents". He's ticked off a lot of people. If he tried to join our group, we wouldn't have him.

in addition to what matt, spiff, and ali posted, i'll echo with this: don't do it. it's totally uncool and unprofessional.
if you want a press pass, earn it. here's the right way to go about getting credentialed. |
