I've been a member now almost a month and have tried to be a "good boy" by voting and commenting as much as I can. During the past few challenges, I've voted on all images and commented on at LEAST 20% - (The last two challenges about 50%.) When I make comments I start with my top and bottom picks and then work down and up towards the middle. I guess that's because the top picks are always easy to comment on, while the bottom picks need the most encouragement/help.
How do you feel about this approach? Should I be concerned that only 75-76% of my comments are marked as helpful? I looked through them and did not find any common thread on the ones that were not checked helpful - both positive and negative comments were not checked. |

i wouldn't be upset with a 75% helpful ratio. i've never really looked at mine, but i'd guess i'm way under that. there really isn't any real pattern to what gets marked helpful. |

I've only been a member for about 6 weeks, but I have made it a point to comment on at least a few photos each challenge (as much as I can). I have made 306 comments, 220 of which (72%) were marked as "helpful." I have only received 72 comments, so I guess I need to figure out how to make my photographs more "commentable" (if that is a word I can make up for this use!). I've also cast 1449 votes, because I have voted on every photo in every challenge since I joined. I have received back 1442 votes, so people are obviously voting as much as I do, but just not commenting. I don't think there's any way to fix that, because people have lives and it's hard to find time.

75% is a great ratio. Unfortunaly, some people, even the best photographers here dont click helpful for any comments. Myself, I click helpful on all comments, even if they are a bit rude or a bit strange. If someone spends the time to comment, well I can sure click a box.
And I looked at your past few comments, and they seem insightful and helpful. Good luck to ya.

I look forward to, and appreciate very much, the comments I have received. I have learned a tremendous amount in the few weeks I have belonged to this site. I try to leave as many comments as possible; however, with my "dial-up" service running slow and slower these days, I may have to wait to get more involved until the broad-band service is hooked up. I live outside of town in a fairly rural area, so we are not first on the list. I also commute over 100 miles a day, so frequently my time is limited. I have made it a point to vote in every challenge.
Just wanted to say thanks for the comments you have left on my entries. I agree with Riggs that they are insightful and helpful. Please keep doing what you're doing. You ARE helping. |

i was looking at my comments after i posted to this thred, and realized that my % marked helpful is really low because so many came before the helpful check box was added to the site.
on a side note. reading your early comments show's you how far you've come as a photographer, and how much your tastes change. it may not be as evident for those who haven't been here a long time, but for me (going on 3 years here) it shows a lot. |

I wouldn't be to worried about it. I feel that every comment is helpful in some way or another, be it positive, negative or indifferent. I have read some of the comments you have left and find them quite insightful and good. It is good to see that someone is showing such a positive attitude towards leaving comments and trying to help other photographers in the quest of improving. Cheers mate...
Keep the comments coming because although "Your score is a appreciated, it is the comments that help me learn." |
