They don't have to be your own animals. Or even pets. But you're probably right. On the other hand, if we have to stick to challenges that can be conveniently shot/entered by anyone anywhere anytime then why are we complaining of repetitive/boring challenges?

yes, it would be fun. double. but if we said "couple" or "coupla" we might indeed get 3. or more. Or MAYBE, we should call it "They're a Couple," and not restrict it to animates.
