My camera uses 4 AA batteries. I use radio shack rechargeables to cut cost and save on waste. I have to charge them every 3-5 days depending on LCD use and such... So since I have to charge my batteries so often I don't bother setting the clock inside the camera.
I was looking for the EXIF data in ACDsee but couldn't find the "metadata" tab so just using explorer I went to see the properties of a pic and it said:
Created - Saturday, January 03, 1998 2:51:19 PM
Modified - Saturday, January 03, 1998 2:51:20 PM
Accessed - Tuesday, August 26, 2003
So I guess my question is; if I was recommended for DQ and I submitted the original with this info would it be considered illegal?

| Always work on a copy. Keeping the original unaltered will yield the information. See this for more info on EXIF. |

Kali,
Your camera does not keep the date for a while with the batteries removed?? Try setting the clock then removing them for only a minute or two, replace thema and see if the date is still set.
If that works, just keep an extra set charged and swap instead of removing, charging, reinstalling.
If your date is incorrect, and you cannot show the shot was taken within the timeframe, you could possibly be DQ'd, though I wouldn't care to speak for the site council, of course.

Yeah I've seen that FAQ, faidoi... I have ACDsee 3.0 maybe my version doesn't have a "metadata" tab.
Kirbic, I set the time and date (first time in 3 years) and tested to see if it would last while switching out batteries, which it did.
Great, so now all my previous submissions could've been DQ'd. |

Yeah, but they weren't! Anyway you didn't in fact violate the timeframe rule :^}

But doesn't the accessed thing kinda make it obvious that the picture was taken today but an error on my part at not setting the time/date in the camera? And my pictures are NOT in violation, they're taken within the exposure dates of the challenges... I just never thought about the date/time in the camera until today.

Kali,
Your experience definitely brings up a good point about verification. The file date/time (creation and/or modificationdates) can be spoofed with incredible ease, and therefore I don't think the modification date would be even considered as "proof" of exposure date. The EXIF data, though it can be faked, can't be casually modified, and therefore is a better indicator. It does, however, depend on accurate date/time setting on the camera.
Lesson: it behooves us all to check our settings! I did!

I use a program called FotoAlbum 3 to archive my pictures. It gives me the date/time/settings stuff, but now I'm wondering if it would change if I changed the date on my camera.. hmm..
I like FotoAlbum because I can put a caption in w/ the photo, then do a search by captions (or date, or other things). Oh yes, and its free.

Well, I will now that I thought about it. Really it can't be proved one way or the other cuz I can show you a pic of my daughter as a newborn on Jan, 1 1998 then another pic of her at two years old also on Jan, 1 1998. I'm glad i caught this now instead of being DQ'd later... although it could still happen, Aloha!

OK. I am a newbie, so I am going to ask even if this was previously answered in different threads.
If I shoot in TIFF mode (prefered for it's uncompressed data), does it give me EXIF info? Or do I really have to stick to JPGs for this website specifically?

| I shoot in tiff mode, the exif data is still there. Same camera too, BTW. I can't say enough good things about the C-4000. Just wish smart media wasn't limited to 128mb cards. |

To cut costs get an extra set of cheapo alkaline batteries, and put those in the camera while the others charge up. I always keep a set of alkalines in my camera bag just in case ...
No, I don't think we're going to go back and DQ your old photos.
Yes, any new photo for which verification is requested will be DQ'd with date info like this.
The rules now explicitly say that we don't take any excuses anymore for bad dates on your files.

| I recently discovered my warez that downloads the pix has an option to set the date before downloading... so when I do forget to set it internally, I'll be covered. :) |

I think you are more at risk (of DQ) altering the date afterwards ... I can't see why this wouldn't be considered "modifying EXIF data" in violation of the rules.
I reiterate my earlier suggestion to invest another $2 in temporary replacement batteries to maintain the camera's settings while you recharge the others. |
