For all you Eagle watchers. Here's an interesting story about a found eagle in Minnesota, and a bargaining point for those of you who need to justify a longer, faster lens.

Eagle found story

The camera shuts down for the season this Saturday. Right now it is focused mainly on the nest rather than the "Y" because apparently someone thought it would be cute to make a sign and trespass onto the barn meadow and get in front of the camera. Rather than shut the camera down early, RRP only focuses on the "Y" now when a camera operator is present. I appreciate the compromise and the patience of the land-owner. It would have been so easy to respond by shutting the camera down early.

I heard today that D1 is in the Arctic, above tree line. The map itself has not yet been updated, but some of the usual forum posters have spoken with Bob Anderson and are relaying the messages. It is amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing whether this year's eaglet strikes out in the same direction or heads for unique territory.

They captured one of the eaglets today (D14) and put a transmitter on "her". It should be interesting to follow this second one and see if the migration patterns are similar.

I am so glad you are keeping us posted on the Decorah Eagles.

They are nearly out of the nest and on their own now.
It's been a fantastic experience watching the nurturing and raising of these little fluff balls.

My heart is breaking...RRP announced that D12, the oldest of the three hatchlings this year was found dead at the base of a power pole, the apparent victim of electrocution. It has not been a good year for baby eagles...

If I can figure this out, this is a newscast D-12

That is horrible news

That's awful. I kept thinking that there were so many problems everywhere else, but not at Decorah. Can't believe I was wrong.

D14 - the juvie with the transmitter - is a male.

When they put on the transmitter they found some loose feather which were sent for analysis and the results came in a couple of days ago.

So now they will be tracking the travels of both a male and a female - last year's D1.

Wonderful photos, mainly of D14, here.

More bad news from Decorah D14

And then there was one. How very sad. I knew them when they were babies

awww... drat!

It's scary that there are that many hot lines/poles out there. You know how many birds land on those things.

ancientimages Sad to have this update, but thank you for posting it.
It was a fascinating journey to see this little guy progress, literally from the egg
to maturity.

I checked the Decorah site a day or two ago. There is still a live camera trained on the nest and I was lucky
enough to see an eagle perched on one of the limbs supporting it.

So, with luck, they will be back "next year."

How many of the three have survived. Is there only 1 left from the 2012 hatching?? Or has he perished as well?? It is about that time to start checking on the nest again.

The parents are still very much in evidence. There's just one problem - they have started making a second nest. If they use that one, then the cameras will be in the wrong place.

Only one had a transmitter fitted, so nobody will ever know whether the third one survived. One can only hope.

Probably by now, everyone who was watching the Decorah Eagles knows they have transfered to a different nest.

i have just learned of another eagle's nest here in the Northern California, Humboldt County.
The link is here.

Two chicks came out of the egg yesterday and are being tended beautifully by their parents.

Since it's on the west coast, viewing time will be pretty good longer.

Enjoy!

ETA: Ooops the picture just went to black and white. Sun went away.
More tomorrow.

What a pity. I can't believe they went to another neighborhood.

Checked the new kids, but they don't seem to have a night-vision camera...

They didn't move far. There are still cameras getting shots from a distance with regular updates on Facebook. They just can't get the kind of detail we're used to.

Ah, yes. Here's a youtube picture of the alternate Decorah nest activity.

No where near the quality of the Decorah eagle nest of years past, still
this live glimpse of the Humboldt County (California)
eaglets makes for a pretty good fix 'until next year.'

The Decorah eagles seem to be back on camera again.
Here's the link which I think is live.
