One egg has been laid. The female just took off. But, she'll be back. The pair won't leave the egg unincubated for very long.
eta: she's back. Confirm first egg laid. As you all may remember, three or four eggs are laid one to two days apart. About 35 days of incubation. First egg now expected to hatch on March 30, 2014.

Darn, that is cold weather for egg-laying and incubating! Pretty much all of the coming week, single digit highs and below-zero lows. Brrr.

The next round of polar vortex is supposed to be very cold. The eagles are probably okay, as long as the nest in the tree retains its integrity. The supply of nearby food is good. They are an experienced pair of adults. Their top priority is to keep the eggs incubated. A severe cold snap is probably less dangerous now than when the chicks are hatched and jumping around. |

| Two eggs may be the complete size of this clutch. A third egg born a week after egg 1 would be at a severe disadvantage. So, two are enough. |

The 3rd egg has been laid. Also, I've observed the male and female taking turns at incubation. It's a shared duty for this species. |

| I dont think the eagles really mind the camera, and even if they do, the probably don't have the money to buy a jammer... |

Wow! Tough winter conditions in Iowa. Both adults are sharing the incubation duties. You'll note the adults do not leave the eggs uncovered for very long. |
