I'm so ... in awe.
Well done, Semper!
Please tell us the story.
I'm sure what we're all imagining is better than it really was, so your humility is being ruined by not telling all.
*grin*

STILL no story or photos :-(
I wanted to give him a "high five" afterwards, but it's taking too long.
So pat on the back, anyway, details or not. |

toddhead calls himself a friend!
First, thanks for all the kind words.
The story:
I'm a Scoutmaster and on Saturday our Troop participated in a "Merit badge" midway in which I was in charge of the Fishing merit badge. I had approximately 13 Scouts with me and a couple of extra leaders. The scouts range in age from 12-16. We also were accompanied by a grandson of one of the other instructors at the event. His name is Sal and he is 6 years old. Sal loves to fish and was very excited about this opportunity. Sal didn't have a fishing pole so my son found a branch on the ground and made him one. Sal was the first to catch a fish! He was REALLY excited as you can imagine. Fast forward about an hour...Sal apparently dropped something in the water and was trying to get it out and leaned too far forward and fell head first into the water. I was on the other end of the pier and heard a large splash. As I turned to see what it was I noticed a large commotion around the area and realized one of the boys had fallen in. All the scouts I was with could swim, so initially I was thinking to myself, "What knuckle head decided to jump in?" The temperature at the lake was around 40 degrees. Not a great day for swimming. But as I got closer to the edge of the pier I noticed it was Sal. Sal could swim according to his grandfather, but when I saw the look on his face I knew something was wrong. As many of you know I have 6 kids (1 more due in about 4 weeks) I have seen many looks on little kidsâ faces, but I have never seen this one, nor do I ever want to see it again. It scared me into that lake immediately. I was able to jump next to him, but far enough where he was able to keep his head above the water. I just grabbed him and swam (if you want to call it that) back to the pier. I swam with him for about 15-20 feet, but it seemed like 100 yards. I haven't been that exhausted in a long time. The other leader and scouts were able to grab him out and get him to a warm environment. Sal is fine.
I chose to tell this story not for "Heroic" purposes, but to share the things we did way before this event occurred. Please keep these in mind if you ever find yourself in this situation.
1. We had a safety class before we even got next to the water.
2. We had extra adults there.
3. We had a safety vehicle close by. (The fishing area was about a half mile walk from the rest of the Midway.)
4. We didnât panic!
BTW, Iâm no longer âAwesome Manâ. My troop calls me, âAqua Manâ :)

That old Scout motto: "Be Prepared" sure received a good object lesson with your grand story and outcome.
Nice work, Sempermarine! |

Wow, what a great rescue that is. As a Mother of a 6 year old son, I would be eternally grateful if that had happened to my son. |

People do not always do what they should, when they should, despite preparation. Nice job! |
