I have a 40gb X-Drive II that I am considering selling. The reason I want to get rid of it is that you can't format the hard drive with windows XP. I'm not sure why this is but that's what I've been told. I think you need windows 98. I don't know anyone with windows 98 and I don't want to deal with it. So, if anyone has win98 or knows somebody who does I thought you might be interested. I was thinking somewhere around $175. Of course, if you can't get it to work we'll trade back.

Are you sure Jason? I have a 20 Gb one and I have no problem with it and WinXP... Sounds really weird since its nothing else than an usb HDD and since xp sees it should be able to format it too.

You can format the drive, it's creating the partitions that can't be done under XP (or Windows 2000).

You may want to try out the demo version of 7tools Partition Manager. It just may solve your problem...

Why do you want to format it??
04/28/2004 12:17:40 PM · #8
It's because it needs to be a FAT32 partition and for some idiotic reason Windows XP will not format anything FAT32 bigger than 8gb. Had the same problem when I got a big drive to go into my existing XDrive (which involved me dismembering my laptop twice - once to partition it and then again when I found I couldn't format it either!)

So how did you solve it for our one in the end then? :o)

And what about for the second one we just bought?

Winxp does not run off of a fat 32 it uses NTFS.

I think that is the reason it doesn't work.

Not necessarily - XP can use either FAT32 OR NTFS.

JPR,

I think you get a small util on the driver CD that's capable of formatting the drive. You might try digging that out. I never used it myself because Win2k partitioned my 20GB drive ok...

Yes this is correct. You have to choose at the start of the setup. One or the other.

NTFS, you can have files larger than 3.99 gigs.

I am using XP since more than 1 year with 2 Hdd's the main one(40gb) wich is NTFS and another one wich is Fat32(20gb) had no problem with formating or anything with any of them. I have no problem formating my 20gb X-driveII eyther. All I can think on Jason's problem, is some usb drivers issue or something like that. Jason do you have theyr original drivers disk? if you don't I would be happy to send you the files I have on my original disk I got with the X-drive. Just pm me if you want them.

I was a little off - XP can format FAT32 partitions up to 32gb in size. It can mount and access any size of existing FAT32 partition but cannot format anything over 32gb. While it's true to say that at install time you choose what format your disk is in (NTFS/FAT32) that doesn't in any way "lock" XP into only understanding one or the other. It's a limitation on the format program itself under XP - I suspect to force users of large drives into using NTFS because MS have decided that it's "better".

Jason's problem has nothing to do with drivers (the Xdrives don't require any drivers under XP) - it's a limitation on the operating system itself.

The Xdrive does NOT support NTFS, only FAT32 (well, possibly FAT16 too, I don't know off the top of my head - I'd have to check!)

See how confusing this thread has become. This is exactly why I want to sell it. Oh, and I need to format it because as of now it is unformatted thus unusable. My computer stopped reading it all together so I sent it back in while it was still under warranty and they fixed it but didn't bother formatting it for me. The other reason I want to sell it is that even if it was working I would never actually need to use it. My 1gb card and two 256mb cards are plenty for weekend getaways which are pretty much all I can hope for in the next few years. PM me if interested.

The only thing I would say to that is that if they've returned you the thing unformatted then send it back and tell them to format it!

Essentially they've sent you a non-functional item, and it's unreasonable to expect you to have to go through all the hassle of formatting it (if you even can) when it's their responsibility. As you say, unformatted it's unusable to you, so they certainly haven't "fixed" it!
