What I DO want to complain about is the complete lack of minimal challenges. |
Of the last 25 challenges, 5 have been Expert Editing. Seems like 20% to me, if one uses that short history. Seems to be a trend in that direction. Only 2 Basic ruleset challenges. No minimal ruleset challenges. The rest have been Advanced.
I'm not complaining. I have entered several Expert Editing challenges. I've done okay, but a realistic looking photo will experience a negative bias from some voters. For the record, I don't intend to alter my photography or my postprocessing to place better in challenges here. Expert Editing is just not interesting to me. |

There, I started a thread about it. :)
Now, back to the apocalyptic nightmare we're supposed to be dealing with....
I wish I was in NM right now, tons of great stuff there I could use for this. |

20% is not too much Richard :)
One point against Expert editing is that images are not photorealistic, but on this site I very frequently see super HDRized photos that are VERY far from realism (I'm not talking about yours of course) and no one complains. |

Just a quick look at the front page and the first page of challenge archives and there have been three expert challenges in the last 13 challenges offered. Not dominating the challenge offerings, but they do seem to be happening more frequently lately. Understandably, perhaps, as the photographers that are really interested in them would likely move on if they weren't offered, and DPC would lose some inspired talent.
I don't exactly mind the expert challenges but, just thinking about it now, I realize that I rarely even look at the entries, before or after the challenge.
That said, I do love this theme, will try to shoot for it (as Expert isn't mandatory, only allowed), and I'm looking forward to seeing the submissions.
[And I agree with your sentiment about minimal challenges. A shame they pop up just a few times a year.] |

After the disaster that destroys our civilization, we might be limited to cameras that will take any AA batteries. For this challenge it would be interesting to restrict the camera to a point and shoot non-technical camera that has a viewfinder & runs on AA batteries, which is what I predict the photojournalists will be carrying through the smoking post-apocalyptic rubble. It is good to be prepared. |

Depends on the disaster, of course, but a return to the stone age might mean the artists will seek cave walls and earth pigment paints. AA batteries would be an anachronism. Just saying.... |

Well of course I meant in the immediate aftermath of the disaster that destroys our civilization. hehe If we are destroyed along with it, then of course there wouldn't even be any smoking rubble left. Just radioactive rain, cockroaches, & mutated viruses, none of which have any interest in photography.
Sometimes I'm tempted to think...I wonder if those who are uninterested in Expert editing are similarly fascinated by basic reality, as verified by the 5 senses. |

So, I've figured out my "Plan A" for this shot. And a "Plan B"... these being locations.
Now... editing. What to do? What to do?
Can't shoot until Monday, going out of town tomorrow AM.
So I won't have much time to work on it.
Though, that'll be ok.
Perhaps I can find some other areas on our way to NC.
The American Legion is putting on a special benefit event for Dallas. :)
So, I will get some good pics while we're there.

I hope this challenge equates to a return of Grog.
The benefit event sounds cool Denielle. |

If you can't come up with something for this challenge for whatever reason, it's not the end of the world. |

I'm trying to figure out why this wasn't scheduled to start December 22 ...
FWIW all of my cameras use AA batteries. ;-) |

I put in a basic edit. And I'm quite happy with the image. :)
My hope is that the voters don't just think it's a digital manipulation. |

I'm caught between lousy photography skills and even worse photoshop skills.
Ideas, I have a bunch, no way to execute. |

I'm in. I like my entry, which means most of the voters will reject. LOL!!!! The image stands well w/o a title, but the title helps. Needed advanced edit ruleset, but sure didn't need any Expert Edit. |

I pulled out all the stops. Took me a good 30 minutes to process this image from 4 separate captures. I'm looking forward to seeing how badly I get hammered. :-) |

i really wanted to enter this, but i just couldn't break away from my schedule to shoot what i intended for the background. we really need to start allowing us to forgo the date range for the expert challenges.
or why don't we just start having a monthly expert challenge that fits a topic so we have plenty of time to shoot and process and this way it wont take up a spot for the usual normal editing challenges.

I'd pick up a website like this. Love procrastinating, plus, I'm a developer by trade. Shit would get done, and it wouldn't be like boxing a glacier. |
