Poor fellow, looks to be a photographer with quite a bit of kit.. Story claims he drowned before rescuers arrived.

Now why do I want to watch a video where someone dies? Isn't that called a "snuff film"? A written story would be just fine. :-( (Not slamming you for posting the link, but whoever posted it in the first place.)

It's a video of a guy being swept off rocks by a wave. Snuff film would imply that you see the fellow actually die.
There's some pretty serious educational value in this video, and it's not the snuff film you're imagining.
ETA: As to why you would want to watch it? For me the answer is that I take a lot of risks, and actually examining real-life situations that went bad has probably saved my life more than once already. If you don't take risks, then it probably has little value to you, but for me, I like to do my very best to figure out exactly where "the line" really lies... This video, for example, has reminded me that rogue waves do happen, and that cliff faces above the ocean are a very tenuous place to be.

in the one shot you can see him out in the water, possibly staying a float. but yeah,i wouldn't be near those waves. |

Eek. Poor guy. Good lesson to think twice before putting yourself in danger. |

I guess I'm old school. I still prefer my news in print, rather than video. I would guess the educational value is something along the line of being aware of one's environment at all times, though I'm not sure (having not watched the video) whether or not anyone should have been aware of the danger following a typhoon. |

You know, print misses a lot of details. I prefer the most information rich source I can find... Which usually means a print article along with a video or photos. Besides, journalists always seem to feel a need to 'spin' a story, videos tend to be more truthful in my experience. |

Nah, I knew that (I've seen this video previously, spectacular mistake.)... I just really didn't know Youtube still allowed that sort of content. |

Wow. Awful.
No shot is worth anyone's life.
And... how do they know that he drowned ten minutes after. I doubt that he was seen after he was swept away.
I'm so sorry for his family. I'm sure they didn't want to see the shot that much.
I'm thankful for the video. It's a rude awakener.

Are you sure he isn't a fisherman? - That looks more like a rod bag on his back.
Oh, and liveleak... you can see all sorts of gory vids on there that wouldn't be allowed on youtube, if you've got the stomach for it. |

There are worse ways to die. Dying with one's boots on is okay, if he was doing something he really loved. Thanks, Cory, for the post. Darwinian, but that is the reality of life and the potential consequences of risk taking. If you never take any risks, you may live to an old, old age... facing other consequences. But, risk taking is the essence of real living. |

Not sure at all... Could be a rod, but who would try to fish there in that pounding surf?
As for LL being full of gore, it is the (admittedly weaker) progeny of Ogrish, but there's really quite a bit more to it these days.

Absolutely! Of course, I love taking the risks, and hopefully videos like this lower the odds that I'm going to do something fatally foolish. |

Too many people live in a world where they think they're "safe" and do stupid things, expecting that they will be saved if something bad happens.
It's the same thing when people stroll around disconnected from the world, earbuds in, music on, and texting then wonder why they walked into a lamppost.
Sometimes Mother Nature will reach out and remind you who is really the boss. Pay attention. |

im only 30 not wanting ti sound like an old man but i see alot of parents molly coddling their kids and removing the vital risk assement learning phase
i grew up in the country side we'd go out at 9 and be back for tea at 6pm we'd be shooting .22 and riding quads, climbing etc and we learnt the risks etc
kids today all have mobile phones and are always a phone call from rescue
i see it with my friends, some of them cant change a tire on their car or wire a plug not life saving i know but no grounding in the real world
having almost died 2 years ago when i got set on fire, i had my work boots on and it wouldn't have been much consolation if im honest id rather die in a drink drug fuelled young blonde ladies orgy ;) haha |

The thing I found amazing about the video is the fact that he had his back to the waves. He had to know that there was a risk of a big wave coming in, and he turned his back to mess with his equipment. Of course there is nothing to say things would have been any different had he seen it coming, but his posture showed that he did not recognize and respect the danger that he put himself in. |

while this is sad, i feel its a reasonable argument for that unnecessary super-telephoto purchase. |

Perhaps he was not accustomed to locations such as this.
Many people such as myself, have little if any knowledge of the sea and things like "rogue waves" and other forms of tidal movements, and many pay the ultimate price.

This sounds likely. And I am guessing you could stand there for an hour and watch the waves never come near those lower rocks, so you decide to go down there for a better view / shot and BAM! Just what the Grim Reaper was waiting for. It's sad, it's tragic and I don't know that the guy was an idiot - I might have done stupider things. I believe when it's your time, it's your time. |
