I received a comment from a "fellow DPCer" that stated that one of my images was like an Arbus....I may have totally misread this statement but Diane Arbus was well known for taking pictures of marginal people, IE freaks. This disturbed me, was this commenter stating that my daughter was similar to an Arbus photo, if so, that was way out of line IMO!

Knowing the poster he would not be making a comment about your daughter but referring to the style of photo Arbus took rather than the person in the photo.

Arbus is one of my favorite photographers. I don't think of her as a photographer of "marginal people" and that wasn't my point. I'm talking about the style of her portraiture. In her portraits, people seem like they have been standing still for a few seconds. They have gone beyond those first few seconds when they are completely composed for the camera, and they are just starting to reveal some strain. This is the "awkwardness" I was referring to. In this awkwardness, we see something real, something beyond a typical portrait. It's almost like the photographer is staring too long at her subject.

or if you want the short answer, she's not smiling. lol. I love that.

photo got a 7 from me.

I put my explanation in the photo comments as well.

Thank you for clearing that up, I was hoping I had misunderstood your comment.

This sort of makes me wonder what you've been up to as your profile says you've been around since '03. To most people 'round here, having posthumous recognize your work and compare it to an icon like Diane Arbus is about as good as it gets.

Just FWIW......taking the short & sloppy Wiki synopsis as your reference is pretty much never a good idea.

Part of this issue is the inherent difficulty in keeping photographs of your own children objective in your own mind. It's imperative if you continue to post them on a forum such as this.

Have we ever had an Arbus challenge?

I never take a WIKI synopsis as my only reference, I have studied her work. And for being around since 03, I have a business I run and have been busy, have just recently ventured back into the DPC community. Any comment is appreciated I assure you, and any user....not just Don is greatly valued.

I'm upset because Posthumous never leaves me any comments that upset me.

You guys aren't doing it right. You're suppose to post your reactions in a new thread. How else is this game of passive, passive agressive suppose to work?
